EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Probably the most performance-focused of the Japanese midsize sedans, the Altima isn't a sports car but it has sporting intentions without too heavily compromising utility and comfort.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

With superb handling and genuinely quick responses, the Altima is as impressive on a mountain road as it is in daily driving. Its large V6 is superbly capable in any situation, while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder is on par with its competitors' base engines.

Comfort

RATING

Nissan makes a small ride-quality compromise to achieve the Altima's sporting character. But overall, it's a worthwhile sacrifice for any driver who will ever have sporting intentions. Comfort is still average for the segment.

Function

RATING

Intuitive control functionality makes the '07 Altima our favorite midsize from a functionality standpoint. All controls are well-placed and operate intuitively. Sedan versions are as capable as their competitors when it comes to moving four full-size adults, and both body styles have adequate trunk space. Coupe style makes an obvious compromise in utility in exchange for sharp two-door styling.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

We like both the Altima's interior and exterior design (especially the sharply styled coupe), which are equally fresh and modern. Build quality is on par with the best in the segment.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Family Friendly The Altima is most prominently a family-friendly sedan, but its sharp lines look equally at home during a night on the town.

Daily Commuter Regardless of trim level, the Altima is an easy-to-live-with commuter.

High Performer Impressive handling and acceleration numbers prove the Altima can play the role of performance sedan when asked.
