I met a mechanic today who fixed 2 Nissan Altima for the same problem: loss of power and high oil consumption. All he did was hollow out the main cat converter. He showed me the honeycomb chunks that were filthy on one side and clean on the back side. He explained that the exhaust was being backed up with pressure causing the oil to spew out of the engine. When altima came out in 2002,,the redesign was stylish exteriorly with decent reliability and it was a success.The new 08 redesign could not do that. Really? We also own a 2002 Nissan Altima and are also experiencing a very similar problem as yours. We just in the last month spend approx 1500 doing all the maintenance and changing all he oils and etc., etc. Something is definetely wrong with it now. The SES sign keeps coming of and on. I own a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5l with 73,000 miles. The SES light turned on 2 days after I had the oil changed and air filter replaced. I was able to find out the error code myself and it was reading ATF temperature sensor error. I bought a 2002 Altima. 2.5, 4-cylinder in April 2002. I had problems from the onset. It wouldn't start on a few occasions. The dealer had to tow it a couple of times, but they never found anything wrong. It suffered catastrophic engine failure after about 90K miles. ok, I'll try to exlain this as best I can. fist off, the CVT doesn't use a "belt". It's actually a chain. Much like a timing chain, so long as it lubercated with clean transmission fluid, It's not going to break.
