Hello, So as an update on my recant post #655 yesterday I received SES(Service Engine Light Soon). Checked at Auto Zone with result of an P0011. Not sure what might be causing this as I replaced Camshaft Position actuator few weeks ago and drove about 450 miles with no issue. The light came on right after I filled my tank with mid grade fuel(octane) asn my mechanic told that will help ... Read More
Well the engine itself can be tested with a cylinder leakdown test, and after that you'll know the extent of internal engine wear. If the engine tests okay, you can also test the cat and the 02 sensors. There's no reason to be guessing here with a shotgun blast replacing all possible causes for the SES light. but no sense replacing any parts on a car with a genuinely ailing engine. ... Read More
I really appreciate your advice. I am not sure if really my engine is going bad or not. It drives with no issues but SES light on. I am not sure if replacing CAT, o2 sensors and camshaft sensors are enough to resolve this issue of SES light?
Well given the history of these engines, it seems like "used" is not a good idea at all. It's probably too valuable to junk, and you can't get much on a trade-in on a crippled car, so really the new engine is your only logical option IF...IF...the rest of the car is in good shape and you still want to drive it for another X years. If you're sick of it, ... Read More

Free Adventure, The exact same thing happen to my 2002 Altima a couple years ago (a car I bought new and have babied!). Go to a race shop - and have the precat taken out you can either hollow it out, or replace it with a racing header. I opted to replace mine with a header / manifold the part looks like this http://www.yourhotcar.com/prod/Spyder/Exhaust/Headers/Nissan_Altima_Spyder_4-1_C- hrome_Header_Exhaust_-_TS-HE-NA93-C/637902/ but any brand is okay. Head gasket are blown because of overheating due to low oil. Jumped timing due to low oil pressure. ALL NISSAN ENGINES GO BAD BECAUSE THE OIL DISAPPEARS. This allows the oil to blow past the oil rings and burn in the combustion chamber and causes the ... Read More

Nissan Corporate didn't do anything for me. They told me, basically that I was SOL. The dealership, however bent over backwards for me and got me a great deal on a used car. I refused to put more money into my altima. As much as I loved the car initially, I had to get rid of it.
I am in the same boat as you. I took mine in for the recall at 22k and they didn't do anything. Now I'm at 107, and engine is on the verge of failing. Did Nissan do anything for you even though you were over the 100k mark?
Well, the Altima runs, sometimes. The precat repair is good, but the head gasket has began to seep a little again. I put sealer in the radiator to hold it, but I just don't trust this engine. I completely agree with what Mr Shiftright said. I assume that you have the 2.3L 4 cyl engine. That car is not worth throwing $5K into it. Thanks for the reply Sara. He didn't say why he thought I needed a new engine except to say that if we just replaced the head gasket he thought it would eventually still need a new engine. I believe it's the pre cat problem. I think they think that because the oil was 1/2 quart low some engine damage has already occurred and will just get worse. It's been 6 days ... Read More
5% is 5% too many...and you wouldn't give a crap what the % is if you were one of the people that has experienced these problems and the financial hardship. I don't know of a single person that has NOT experienced these issues either in these forums or in person. Maybe you just got lucky.
Continued from 414...this message 3 of 3. I have to tell you one more thing...I am one of those peple that battled, and I do mean BATTLED, with Nissan for some compensation, or at least some fair treatment of ANY kind...it took a year, but Nissan gave me a brand new 3.5 engine and cats (on them) and reimbursed me for ALL expenses related to these problems, including rental car costs...which ... Rough engine running is a symptom of a much larger issue... Why exactly did he say you need a new engine? You need a new head gasket - but why? What broke in your engine to cause the gasket to become fouled? These cars DON'T burn oil and have gaskets go bad out of the blue - and I would bet money that if you only replace the gasket - your ... Read More
I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 S which I bought new. It has always has all recommended maintenance performed and all maintenance has been performed by the Nissan dealership. The other day the check service engine soon light came on soon after I started the car. A couple of times in the last few days I had noticed that when I first started the car in the mornings it ran ... Read More
Definitely try to find another Nissan dealer, better yet look up reviews on local nissan dealers and see who has the best overall reviews and choose the dealership with the best rep. The 3.5 SE v6 engine is a much better build then the 2.5 S, i actually wish i had spend the extra $1100 for the 04 altima with the v6 engine then the 03 2.5 S. Im suprised that ... Read More
Hi! I have a 2002 3.5 liter Altima and the problem with the cats is prevalent throughout my ownership of the vehicle. I have had 5 cats replaced, and the last time, Nissan forgot to put oil in my car and I battled with them for a year, and they replaced the engine and cats with all new Nissan factory parts. Well, the new engine has less than 10,000 miles on ... Read More
QR25DE is not bad engine. Without pre-cat it will last hundred thousands of miles as other Nissan engines. even with the pre-cat it will probably last hundreds of thousands of miles. if you compare the number of QR25DE engines sold to the number having problems and your odds are pretty good. on top of that, its mostly limited to the 2002 model (first use of QR25DE) year. once the problem surfaced, ... Ive got a 2002 Nissan ALtima. Ive been having problems with the cruise control when Im driving on the interstate. When you get up to about 70 mph, the cruise kicks off and the car starts jerking a little bit. I thought it might be a clogged injector but I ran "Sea Foam" through it a couple of times and it only helps for a couple of days ( i drive ... Read More
I have a 2002 Altima 3.5 V6 that I bought used with 84k miles on it in Jan 2007. I was the 3rd owner and this car had everything I wanted so I was excited thinking I was buying a reliable brand...WRONG! I thought maybe the person that had it before me ran it too hard but I've been reading the reports and maybe that's not the case and I'm afraid ... Read More
To all those who have posted latey in this forum, I suggest to anyone who has an Altima 2.5 to be sure to read ALL the messeges in this forum starting from #1 to the very end, they are all important. My first messege in this forum was #75. Please tell anyone you know that has an Altima 2,5 about this forum, and warn them of the possible problems that they ... Read More
that is a pretty clever solution. 4 qts every 220 miles? is that on a V6 or V4? what year?
Interesting solution. The advantage to that is you don't have to worry about it going bad again...
I met a mechanic today who fixed 2 Nissan Altima for the same problem: loss of power and high oil consumption. All he did was hollow out the main cat converter. He showed me the honeycomb chunks that were filthy on one side and clean on the back side. He explained that the exhaust was being backed up with pressure causing the oil to spew out of the engine. That explained ... Read More
When altima came out in 2002,,the redesign was stylish exteriorly with decent reliability and it was a success. The new 08 redesign could not do that. Really? So the fact that Nissan tried to keep the Altima the same size (and even make it a little smaller) is a bad thing? Have you even driven one? They're a blast as far as driving dynamics goes. After sitting in an '02-'06 model and ... Read More
