Long Term Reliability of Nissan Altima

I have a 1998 Altima I bought 10 years ago when it had less than 40,000 miles. It now has more than 222,000 miles. It's been an amazing car. I never gave it a tune up in all that time. Just this week, after driving more than 180,000 miles, a spark plug went bad and my car got a tuneup. The mechanic said it sure was a quiet running motor. Bravo ... Read More

I guess its a matter of perspective. I have another Altima - 1998 with 255K miles that over 12 years had a CV boot go out and a belt pulley. Everything else is original on the car (except tires, brakes, serpentine belt changed once). I guess I have been spoiled!

In the 12 years I've had it, excluding tires and front brake pads the only issues I've has was replacing a CV boot on one axle ($108) and a pulley came off on the serpentine belt($30). Couple of light bulbs also. Do oil changes about 4,500 miles, replace coolant and transmission every 30K and thats about it. Hope to make it to 300K in about 2 ... Read More

I' ve owned my altima a little over a year now (2007) and can honestly say its been nearly perfect. there were two recalls, 1 for the Ikey and another for the air filter that I had to have taken care of. It's the distributor! You need to replace the stock Nissan distributor with a Dorman distributor. I own a 1994 Altima (318,000 miles on it) - my daily driver, a 1998 Altima (78,000 - wife's), and a 1994 240SX (play drifter). The distributor on your car has a well known flaw - at low speeds it heats up and causes an oil seal to leak. Right now yours has a small leak. ... Read More

Perhaps, but only because they (Nissan) had a lot of room for improvement. Nissans interiors were never pitiful. GM owned that category. They were average. Now IMO the Altima has surpassed the Camry inside. When it comes to interior fit and finish it still comes down to VW, then Honda and then the rest Yes, and both have gotten worse with the current generation of the CR-V/Accord/Passat/Jetta. I prefer better sources on numbers than what a dealer has to provide. And, I'm in Texas actually. Altima 3.5SE/SL is a rare sight, Camry V6 is rarer. V6 is most common with Accord among the Japanese trio. And even with Accord, Honda forecasts half of sales will be of EX/EX-L trims (probably based on the past). I have spent a lot of time with both and in terms of driving dynamics, visibility, comfort, etc I prefer the earlier version. The 94-97 felt like a blob. Now they are more average due to cost cutting and "decontenting." Nissan decontented the Altima starting in 1997 where they eliminated some options (like auto climate control on the GLE), then they totally messed up the 1998 to 2001's with cheap materials and frumpy new styling.
