I would have to say the Nissan Altima is your best bet. My family has been a nissan family since 1989. I have not seen any numbers or percentages to indicate how common this occurance may be. I know that it happened to my daughters 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5S at about 90,000 miles and I have read that many others have had the same complaints of the Cats failing, exhaust clogging and exessive engine oil consumption, generally ranging from about 60,000 miles to 90,000 ... Referring to my posts #98, #103 & #113, taking apart and reassembling the Altima 2.5S QR Engine, I got the head back from the machine shop Monday afternoon (12/1707). They said the head passed the pressure and vacuum tests, no cracks or leaks, but the head was warped .005", which is too much (was the cause of the head gasket leakage). Just a little testimony to Nissan... We're looking to trade our Infiniti G20 (Nissan Primera to the rest of the world) for a new Altima. The 1994 G20 has 249,000 miles, with NO engine issues ever (other than one fouled injector at 110k). Never needed a CV joint or axle. Still blows ice-cold A/C. Interior w/black leather is immaculate. Mine has several problem: 1) about 56000 mileage (6 years old), I need to rebuild the auto trans with $3000. 2) alternator need to be changed with $200 at about 80000 mileage, 3) at about 90000 mileage (8 years), the intake gasket need to be replaced (leak with code P0304) with $700. Nissans interiors were never pitiful. GM owned that category. They were average. Now IMO the Altima has surpassed the Camry inside. My mother has a '03 Altima that proves this wrong. I need to buy a new car. Right now we have a 2006 Accord (4cyl) and an old, dying 1997 Nissan Sentra. The Sentra must go. What is a typical price for replacement of both front brake pads and rotors on a 1997 Nissan Altima GXE? Monroe Muffler and Brake is trying to charge me $449, then they offered me a coupon which brought it to $375. And I said no, because I could get the parts for much cheaper, so now they are saying $250. What is really a good, and fair price for this job (including labor). Read More...
