My suggestion. Don't buy Nissan. Saving on up front cost will cost you quite a bit in later years. I have owned Honda (Civic 1997 and Accord 2000), Nissan Altima 2006(currently using) and now own Toyota Camry 2011 (as second car). I never bothered to give Nissan a chance when I was searching for 2ns car. Not great piece of engineering. Yes Honda and Toyota have high up front price but ... Read More
I'm going crazy with the analysis. Our 1997 Maxima has about had it. The engine is still great, but things are FINALLY starting to fail on it...and it doesn't look that great. It's time for a new car, then. Or at least a new one to us. Here's all of the inputs into the decision... 1. As you may have guessed, we drive cars until they are dead dead dead. We'll ... Read More
Just bought an Altima 2.5S over the weekend here in Houston, TX. My old car "blew up" and I needed to get something fairly quick so I did not spend a lot of time going from dealer to dealer to haggle and am sure I could have gotten a better deal. I visited two Nissan dealers in all. I initially set out to get a 2.5 (no radio) that was listed ... Read More
Went in yesterday to negotiate a lease deal on a 2010 Altima 2.5SL with premium audio and floor mats, terms were 39mos 12,000K. I'm in New York (Staten Island Nissan) so 8.875 Sales tax. He told me the residual value was 57% (which seemed low) and a money factor of .0012. The MSRP was $28,100. I was putting $2,000 down (actually $1500 and $500 for my trade-in 1997 Pathfinder LE). With a cold engine take a can of brake clean and start the engine. As it begins to warm up spray the brake clean around the intake manifold where it bolts to the head. Any sudden rise in RPM is an indication that the manifold gasket needs replacement.Be carefull not to spray around the exhaust manifold as you could cause a fire.If indeed it needs replacement shop around for the best ... I have not seen any numbers or percentages to indicate how common this occurance may be. Referring to my posts #98, #103 & #113, taking apart and reassembling the Altima 2.5S QR Engine, I got the head back from the machine shop Monday afternoon (12/1707). They milled the head flat, did a valve job, and ... Read More
Just a little testimony to Nissan... We're looking to trade our Infiniti G20 (Nissan Primera to the rest of the world) for a new Altima. The 1994 G20 has 249,000 miles, with NO engine issues ever (other than one fouled injector at 110k). Never needed a CV joint or axle. Still blows ice-cold A/C. Interior w/black leather is immaculate. Drives & steers tight & sharp. No rattles or loose trim. Pearl ... Read More
Mine has several problem: 1) about 56000 mileage (6 years old), I need to rebuild the auto trans with $3000. 2) alternator need to be changed with $200 at about 80000 mileage, 3) at about 90000 mileage (8 years), the intake gasket need to be replaced (leak with code P0304) with $700. Now it has been 110000 mileage.
Nissans interiors were never pitiful. GM owned that category. They were average. Now IMO the Altima has surpassed the Camry inside. My mother has a '03 Altima that proves this wrong. It's quite possibly the WORST interior (both in materials and fit-and-finish) that I've ever sat in. The '07-up Altima has improved immensely, but GM has greatly improved their interiors in MOST of their brands, including the new full-size SUVs and ... Read More
I need to buy a new car. Right now we have a 2006 Accord (4cyl) and an old, dying 1997 Nissan Sentra. The Sentra must go. airbag repair really isn't a DIY operation. Maybe the sensor that measures deceleration is bad. You don't want to be messing with air bag circuitry unless you really know what you're doing.
The air bag light on my daughter's Nissan Altima has started flashing and the dealer wants a lot of $$$ just to look at it. Does anyone know what I can do to stop the flashing?

Hi, Alcan: Your comments are very similar to the result of diagnosis. But what I was confused is Why the SEL is NOT on? If BPT (the transducer) or EGR solenoid is wrong, the SEL should be ON. Does Nissan design it differently at 1997 not to turn SEL on? (since at 1997, it will not check NOx at California).
I have 1997 Altima with 68000 miles. It fails california SMOG check with high No. The data of NO is following: 15 mph: measured 607 (maximum 443) AVE 57. 25 mph: measured 561 (Mamimum 730) AVE 50. The Civics from several years ago were impressive for what they were. They clearly outclassed the other economy cars they were competing with. Now they are more average due to cost cutting and "decontenting." Nissan decontented the Altima starting in 1997 where they eliminated some options (like auto climate control on the GLE), then they totally messed up the 1998 to 2001's with cheap materials and frumpy new styling.
you guys are right about Honda, the new Civic is not impressive...just like the '97 Camry was unimpressive. That's because in both cases, cutting production costs was the major goal. Nissan did the same thing on the Maxima and the Altima in 1995 and 1997. Anyway, it looks like Nissan is not going to make the same mistake with the 2002 Altima.
Nissan had a good thing going with the first generation Altima. They just botched it up with the 98 - present Altima that has no character, not to mention being smaller than the Camry and the Accord 4 cyl. You see how Honda responded with the 98 Accord, when it realized that the smaller sized Accord was not what the customers were looking for. Nissan must have the dumbest marketing research ...
