My 1994 Nissan Altima has had intermittant ABS issues since I got it last year. In the snow or rain, the brakes behave very badly, instead of the usual ABS thumping, it sounds like metal on metal and makes some frightening noises. The ABS light comes on a few times a week and sometimes as I'm pulling out of my parking space, it will make this strange swooshing noise and I ... Read More
Hi Swam, Did changing out the mass air sensor correct the problem? I just started to have this similar problem where the car stalls after coming to a stop and then accelerating. The car reaches 1k rpm within the 1st few minutes after starting it, but the rpm will gradually go down and does some hick-ups-dies later on. I'd appreciate it if you'd respond to my question.
I have a '95 Altima that sounds like the same issue you are having. Check the EGR valve. Mine was stuck open. The valve should move freely about 1/2 inch.

swamibob, When I had some similar issues, it was a dead fuel injector. You might have them tested. Ken
This car has ran great ever since I have owned but now it is starting to give me some problems that have recently gotten worse. It was only driven a couple of times a month for about 2 years, but recently my wife went back to work and had been using it every day for the last 6 weeks or so. All of a sudden, whenever you were driving and let ... Read More
Check on passenger side of engine below a maze of railings---it is attached to the breather/seperator. Look directly in line with the N in Nissan towards the firewall. Inaccessible from above. Must be removed from below. You can barely see it from above, peeping and taunting you!!! I am going to evaluate the situation from below on my '95 Altima tomorrow and see whether to remove the IAC valve or the ... Read More
here you go: 1994 Altima Firing Order
It's the distributor! You need to replace the stock Nissan distributor with a Dorman distributor. I own a 1994 Altima (318,000 miles on it) - my daily driver, a 1998 Altima (78,000 - wife's), and a 1994 240SX (play drifter). The distributor on your car has a well known flaw - at low speeds it heats up and causes an oil seal to leak. Right now yours has a small leak. ... Read More
You ask many questions about what the problem could be, but the only way to find out is with proper diagnosis, not just guessing. How many miles on this engine? First, what was the problem with the fuel injectors and what was done about it? Fuel injectors ar relatively trouble free. Sometimes they can clog or burn out. If you have bad ones, you simply replace them with new ones and ... Read More
I have a nissan altima. We first had some problems with the injectors. Than I was driving the car and it just died. Than it wouldnt start. I am wondering could it be the distrubitor. Or I also was told that it could be the timing chains. We want to get the car fixed but we are afraid that if it is the timing chains the valves could be bent. Does ... Read More
Just a little testimony to Nissan... We're looking to trade our Infiniti G20 (Nissan Primera to the rest of the world) for a new Altima. The 1994 G20 has 249,000 miles, with NO engine issues ever (other than one fouled injector at 110k). Never needed a CV joint or axle. Still blows ice-cold A/C. Interior w/black leather is immaculate. Drives & steers tight & sharp. No rattles or loose trim. Pearl ... Read More
If your car uses a chain like most nissan vehicles, it shouldn't slip. However, with almost 300k miles on it, who knows. thats a lot of miles.
I have a 1994 Nissan Altima - automatic. I purchased it brand new with 6.5 miles on it. It now has over 298,000 miles on it. I keep up with the maintenance and change the oil about every 2,000 miles with Valvoline 5w30. So far it's been a great car with very few problems. Recently it became hard to start. I did a full tune up on it replacing the original ... Read More
I actually much prefer the 1990-1993 Accord to the 1994-199(6 or 7?) in every way. The handling was the best ever (90-93). In 94 they had to make the car larger, and heavier, to accomodate the newly available V6 engine. In 92 the Accord was too small for a V6, now it seems to be too large for the I4 IMO.
I actually much prefer the 1990-1993 Accord to the 1994-199(6 or 7?) in every way. I have spent a lot of time with both and in terms of driving dynamics, visibility, comfort, etc I prefer the earlier version. The 94-97 felt like a blob. I looked at the 98-'02 version before a purchase in 1998/9 and I ended up with something that better met my needs/wants. In 2005 we went to ... Read More
O RLY? The Altima is not using the (new) VQ35HR, it will use the VQ35DE with new internals. HELP!! I'm a new owner of a 1994 Nissa Altima GXE, bought it 2 months ago with only 26,500 miles on it. Practically NEW!! It seemed fine, but after running on these rough back roads, I have noticed noisy rattles , actually sounds like something is ready to fall apart in the front end, of my car. It is not audible on very smooth roads, nor can you elicit the sound ... Read More
Hi, It happens time to time (sometime separate by weeks sometime two days in a row) that at a red light (so in drive mode) the idling is getting erratic and then if I try to start at the light or sometime even if I don’t accelerate the car end by stopping. When I restart it again it generally runs quite fine. I noticed that sometime, its seams it’s going to ... Read More
Hi Karen, I am an owner of altima 1994 and I need to replace it with a new one. But I saw a new Altima 3.5L V6 specs by Nissan which says: Nissan recomends premium fuel. What does it mean? Is this mandatory grade 91 or optional? How does that affect performance of an engine? I do know for all german autos suprime grade of fuel "required"! Can I use regular ... Read More
I recently bought a Nissan Altima of 1994 model and it seems to have oil leakage. Could you tell me how much does it cost to repair this leakage? Thanks!!!
The car is a 1994 Nissan Altima. 88,720 miles on it. My husband and my boss brought it to Meineke to get a second opinion on the front right strut. Apparently, it was only the strut mount that needed replacing. Would you drive this car on the highway knowing that the first mechanic said that the right wheel could fall off anytime?
The Altima's interior looks very cheap, about Cavalier grade. The Mazda6 is much better. I sat in one at the NYIAS, and it was very nice inside. No hard, cheap, shiny plastics like the interior of the Nissan is full of. And the wood trim that Nissan uses is uglier than in my friend's 1994 Cougar!
May be you should try the dealer first. I bought one with my 1994 Altima and Nissan charged only 20$us. So it is not too bad for the original version.
I would have to rate the interior a 6. The layout is nice, but the shiny dashboard top is just a little too much. I saw one SE model with leather and fake wood. The fake wood in my friend's 1994 Mercury Cougar looks better than the Altima's, and that's saying something! I hear 2003 models will have improved interior trimmings, I surely hope so. That is about the only thing ... Read More
Hey all- I'm new to this board and thought I'd pose a question. My girlfriend's younger sister is looking for a new car to replace her battered 1994 Grand Prix. I'm a stedfast fan of Japanese cars (I own a Mitsubishi Mirage LS Coupe, my mom has a Galant ES V6 at my urging, and if I can help it, the GF will be driving Mitsu soon enough). However, I've found ... Read More
I have a 1994 Nissan Altima (110K miles) with a problem similar to yours. The engine stalls occasionally after deceleration at the moment it should stabilizes at the idle speed. Some time it does not stall but goes in the sub 500 rpm and get back to its normal idle speed. Once the idle speed is reached, it remains stable. I already checked the On-Board-Self-Diagnostic codes but there is nothing there. ... Read More
Best way to compare IRS vs non-IRS is to use the same platform. Just read all the reviews comparing the IRS Mustang Cobra to the non-IRS Mustang GT. There is a huge difference. There are too many factors, including highly subjective ones, and too many inherent differences between the cars to objectively compare the Maxima's handling to a Camry or Accords. Are we talking base model or sport? Manual or automatic? ... Read More
oh yeah, the Impala!!! I forgot. How is the quality of the interior in that car? you're right the sentra was built in Smyrna. I think part of the reason for the cheaper plastic has something to do with Nissan's new cost savings plan w/ it's suppliers. Since they are are paying the supplier less money, the supplier is providing cheaper materials. The new Altima still has to be better built ... Read More
Can't find the pcv valve on my engine. I saw part in store and it is threaded on one end. Specifically, where is it located? The tech at Nissan dealer said it is on back of engine but he couldn't show it to me. Do I need to view it from under the motor? I've looked everywhere. miklinoma@aol.com
Sorry to belabor the point, but the responses beg the question, when should a car be given a new name then? I owned a 1994 Altima for 4 years. I know from personal experience what a great car it is for the money. But the new new Altima is bigger, more luxurious, more powerful... it's simply much better in every way than it's previous version, and is built specifically to go ... Read More
