What Is It?
20-Inch Forged Aluminum Wheels for the Ford Super Duty
What's Special About It?
Thanks to special models like the Harley-Davidson, Amarillo and King Ranch editions, the freshly restyled Ford Super Duty has made the transition from bland utilitarian work truck to stylish rolling fashion statement. However, until recently Super Duty owners haven't been able to participate in the "dub" trend because most 20-inch wheels aren't rated to withstand the heavy loads F-250 and F-350 owners haul around on a regular basis. To solve the problem, Ford approached Alcoa, the leading authority on aluminum forging, and had it come up with six new wheel designs that offer unparalleled strength and durability with the unique look and style modern truck owners are looking for. All six designs are fully polished and come with an eight-lug bolt pattern in a variety of widths to suit different applications. They are currently available through your local Ford dealer, and pricing information has not been released.
What's Edmunds Take?
Throwing a set of "20s" on new cars, trucks and SUVs is all the rage right now, but while these monster rims offer lots of flash, they aren't very practical. Typical problems caused by adding oversize wheels can include diminished braking capacity, a harsh ride and unstable handling dynamics. Many of the big wheels on the market are of questionable build quality, which is a little disturbing considering they usually end up rolling underneath three-ton SUVs. These new wheels from Alcoa are sure to be strong and safe, and we like the fact that they're going to be offered as a dealer-installed option, which should make finding the right size a breeze and could even make it possible to add the cost of the wheels to the financing package. However, Super Duty owners should be aware that while the hauling capacity of their big trucks won't be diminished by these big rollers, ride quality certainly will be. — Dan Kahn
