What Is It?
2004 Volkswagen Passat TDI
What's Special About It?
Volkswagen's Passat sedan and wagon have officially become the only midsize cars available with a diesel engine. The TDI Passats are targeted toward relatively frugal VW buyers, and as such are offered only on the lower trim levels.
But don't think you'll be giving up a lot in performance. While rated at just 134 horsepower, the Passat's 2.0-liter TDI engine produces an impressive 247 pound-feet of torque that's more than a V6 Altima. That alone will assure spirited acceleration at low speeds and at least adequate passing power on the highway. We'll give you the final verdict after we try one out for ourselves. Volkswagen has not released final fuel economy figures, yet, but estimates put it in the high 30s.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Looking for the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan or wagon on the market (well, except for Toyota's Prius hybrid)? You've found it. Erin Riches
