What Is It?
Lincoln Aviator Concept
What's Special About It?
Lincoln-Mercury is poised to offer seven new Lincoln-Mercury products before the end of 2005 but not just new nameplates. Current models are also undergoing a makeover. After just two years in production, Lincoln is already working on an all-new Aviator. This next-generation Aviator, conceptually shown in Detroit, is the first car-based SUV to come from Lincoln. Redesigned to offer a more carlike ride, the new concept Aviator suggests that the new production version will incorporate many of the same Lincoln design cues that are marking the new Lincoln lineup.
On the exterior is a bright metal strip inspired by the 1961 Continental which begins at the grille and runs over the entire vehicle, outlining the vehicle's profile. Another iconic item is the shiny egg-crate grille that's a derivative of Lincoln grilles of old, and is expected to appear on future Lincoln models.
Under the Aviator's hood lies an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine which produces 245 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. The V6 is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system that also utilizes hill descent control.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Not many months ago, it was unclear if the Aviator nameplate was here to stay. Luckily, Lincoln recognized early in the Aviator's model life that some radical changes were necessary to be competitive in an already mobbed crossover/small SUV market. We're pleased with the Aviator's new direction, and are eager to test its new driving dynamics while enjoying its new, sleek look. Kelly Stennick
