I have the same problem as most of you, temperature knob seems hard to turn and will not engage the heater. My local mechanic said that the dealer would sell the "Heater Box" for $1200 and then labor would be ~$500. This is INSANE! Luckily, I live in Southern California, but we need heat once in a while as well. Has anyone gotten any further with this? Can't afford $1700. Thanks. ... Read More
I had the same problem until a few weeks ago when the knob for temp control actually snapped off! Now I'm stuck on cold air. Called a mechanic and apparently Mitsubishi knows about the problem because they actually sell a repair kit for this exact thing! $822 to fix it because there is a cable that runs to the heater box that is bound up and needs to be replaced. :) Hi all, I just change my 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander cabin air filter. And made a short video clip would like to share with you How To Replace 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander Cabin Air Filter
:) Anyone need this? Mitsubishi Outlander Workshop Manual (1st Generation 2003-2006)
I have this problem as well for about 1.5 years. The dial is stuck right at the top between the hot/cold spot while the engine is running. However, I can easily change the dial over if the engine is off. This may seem like a "duh" thing, but I actually didn't try it w/o the engine on until last fall. Surprisingly this also made my A/C light come back on; it ... Read More
I have the same problem... Did you have any luck, it's getting pretty cold here in New England. Thanks
Further adventures of the Austin, TX. Outlander... The cooling/heating vent on my outlander is stuck so that it won't switch to "heat". I've taken off the actual control knob to make certain it hasn't worn down and it's ok. I'm afraid that I'll have to take of some form of panel to get the vent lubricated or unstuck...and- I have no idea how to do that-any sources you can recommend? Thanks ... Read More
I would guess it's jammed up behind the dash. Probably have to disassemble that part of the dash and free it up.
Hi All, I have a 2003 Outlander and the heat/cooling switch on the dashboard has become partially frozen. It feels like the vent behind the panel is partially stuck- almost like it needs lubrication. Does anyone have an idea how to check/fix this? Thanks, Cold in Austin Texas
What was on the cover? What month, I mean? I honestly didn't see that chart. I looked again at the January 2010 issue and saw something about Owner Satisfaction (Escape and Mariner Hybrids win the category). Maybe you saw a special edition/buyer's guide? I do have that, the "Buying Guide 2010" book and on page 172 they rate the 07 Outlander "Much Better than Average" but the 08 is merely "Average". ... Read More
>> Admit it, you did not know about Subaru's diesel engine. Otherwise why did you mention it on your list of things Subaru doesn't offer that Mitsubishi does? This time I did not say that “Subaru doesn't offer” diesel, but I’ve said however that Subaru is “behind in key technologies: ... Read More

I have a Mitsubishi outlander 2003. Recently I am having a lots of problem with the cooling fans. When I am stocked in heavy traffic the fan does not kick in, therefor the temp. gage rises to red, which in that case I have to shut the engine off for few minutes until it cools down. 6 months ago I replaced the double fan assembly, worked for few weeks only, the ... I am about to graduate from college and researching for a brand new automobile the summer after graduation. I live in Indianapolis, IN and recently went to the auto show to look at all my options in smaller SUVs. The Mitsubishi Outlander stood out above the others for price, accessories (loved the rear entertainment), and MPG. I test drove the Outlander in December and I really like it, but I have ... I've something similar on my '99 Galant. Both AC and heat seem to not really be working right when the vehicle is stopped. I notice it more at long stoplights while in Drive v. in Park but then I rarely sit for long periods in Park. What seems to work for me is to not run the fan on the highest setting. On lower settings the problem doesn't seem to come ... Read More
I would start from coolant, if it hasn't been replaced yet. The other simple one to check/replace is thermostat. The reason computer shoots off AC compressor is too high engine temperature, so additional sources of heat are switched off. As soon as you start driving, cold air from outside help with cooling, and AC can run again.
My husband and I have noticed that at times when our 03 Outlander is in park the A/C begins blowing air (not cool air), then all of a sudden you can drive and the cold air will start blowing again... any thoughts to what problem we are looking at here?

The symmetrical AWD and boxer engine makes the center of gravity in the Forester lower. The reality is AWD/4WD have been around for about 100 years, but Subaru includes AWD with every vehicle. 20vcq - while away for the week how did you find the road noise? I'm pretty much down to the Outlander and the Santa Fe. It was Pierre Gagnon who instituted that 0-0-0 idea which led to major car loan defaults for Mitsubishi. He was of course fired for this in 2003.
Yes. People unassociated with the company dictate what it is worth. The only residual value the company can dictate is the one they designate for a lease value. Nissan used to put extremely high residuals on their vehicles for leasing, and it cost them big time when they took them back. They were not worth what they took them back for. If you are planing on driving an Outlander until the ... Read More
The latest RX350 model was introduced on the same year, as current 2007 Outlander: a year ago, why do you argue? Going from RX330 to RX350 suppose to be a major redesign. Hybrid technology is still a niche market and not adopted yet by ... Read More

Has anyone encountered an irritating squeaking noise coming from the rear suspension of the Mitsubishi Outlander? I was told by the dealership that it is a common problem with the 2003 Outlanders and Lancers. I am trying to decide. Did the Outlander first come out for the model year 2003. If so, that's not too good is it? Which one is safer? Is the Outlander made in Japan? I don't really need 4wd and I don't like the Forester's plastic body cladding, and it is more expensive than the Outlander, which is why I am considering a Mitsubishi. No ABS brakes though, right?
