Going on fwy at 65 / 70 mpg. Timing Belt went out. It was replaced at 60,000. Thought I got a great deal, 4000 cash in November and this happened in Jan at 103,000 miles. In all probability it seems that being it is an interferance engine, that my valves are probably ruined. Got an estimate for 1800 to do the entire job. if so, ... should it just cut my ... Read More
my engine just started to get hot to a point were I had to pull over and stop, turn off my engine due to pinging as it started to dye out to let it cool down and it started to smoke as well by the front end of the motor, close by the water pump?, and my battery won`t start the engine with out a jump just to begain to over ... My 2002 Montero has 35000 miles and at the garage they said that I have to change my timing belt. I am confused because the Mitsubishi maintenance book says that I have to do it at 60000 miles. Can some one help me ? Thank you
Hi, Not sure if anyone can help me. I have a 2002 mitsubishi montero xls that is overheating. There is a metal pipe towards the back of the motor that is leaking. Does anyone know the name of this pipe so that I can replace it???
I seem to be having lots of trouble with our LTD lately and have lost faith in our local Mitsubishi dealer (due to a problem they didn't fix correctly). I am trying to find a good repair manual but can't seem to find one. Does anyone know where I can find a good one? I came across an online service (eautorepair.net), does anyone know if their montero manual is good? Thanks... ... Read More
If it is a 4 or 6 cylinder they both are interferance engines in wich the possibility of valve to piston damage will usually occur if there is a timing belt failure. The interval to change the belt is every 60,000 miles according to my Alldata book. Your either way over due or forgot that it was changed 13,400 miles ago. Timing belts usually don't last that long past their interval. ... Read More
I definitely empathize with you. But if your timing belt goes out, it could lead to a bigger and more expensive plight, so you're (unfortunately) right to worry about it. You say your friends diagnosed the problem; are they mechanics, and if friends, could they let you pay for it in installments? Alternatively, I saw a TV news segment the other day that was discussing the resurgence of bartering as a ... Read More
I am a Female that knows nothing about the maintenance of vehicles, besides oil changes. The minor upkeep has been taken care of like the three small belts, my brother put them on. The brake pads were replaced a few years back and new tires about the same time. Unfortunately, I am jobless now and have to work piddly jobs to afford things like food and toiletries. Now my Timing belt ... Read More
So the battery and BRAKE indicators in my 2002 Montero Sport have suddenly coming on, seemingly for no reason. The E-Brake is definitely not on - we never use it. And my husband replaced the battery this morning, but the lights still are on. Any suggestions? We are not close to a Mitsubishi dealership and have limited car repair budget, so any troubleshooting advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
In 2001/2002 there was a recall on the oil cap for the Mitsubishi Montero 2001. Does anyone have any of the documentation or the recall #? PLEASE HELP!!! EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!
Let's make sure that we compare equivalent cars here... If it's a used LTD 4x4 Endeavor we're talking about for less than $20K then I'd definitely consider it but chances are it's an LS. Recent Monteros are always loaded and are now most heavily discounted new Mitsubishis. If I were to get one I'd go for a new 2005 (just shy of $30K before TTT - $7K off the MSRP). Used ... Read More
It's a high quality Japanese-made SUV. It's no offroad goat anymore but still very capable in all-weather conditions on the road. It's a bit underpowered and thirsty. The interior is great! With the $3000 rebate you should be able to dip right under $30,000. I suspect that they'll increase it to $5000 on October 1, maybe even add the loyalty rebate. It's a low-volume vehicle but every Mitsu is right now... ... Read More
I don't think anyone mentioned it yet but on Jan. 5th Mitsu announced their new and better powertrain warranty applicable to ALL 2004s, even the EVO (10 year/100K miles). Still not as good as my 2002 Trooper but at least there are good chances Mitsubishi will actually stay in business that long :-) http://media.mitsubishicars.com/detail?mid=MIT2004010530337&m- - - - ime=ASC Any news on when 2004 Monteros will be available?

This one attests to its quality build, reliability, comfort, capability, etc etc. Only the fact that everyone wishes it had a little more power stands out. Whats interesting is that Mitsubishi has already reduced the amount of chrome, increased gs mile and power in the 03 model. The oldsmobile dealer here just bought the Mitsubishi franchise and is offering deals on 2002 Montero limited with premium package and running boards that they list for $38,585 discounted to $28,682. A 2003 limited with package is listed for $38,412 and they are only offering $2,500 rebate which seems high or .09% (which I thought was 0% for 60 months). They are really pushing the 2002's which they got at a ... Read More

I lease both a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero and a 2001 4Runner. I would go with a 4Runner; wins hands down. You can still get a great deal on a 2002 models since the 2003 are out now. Don't go with a Montero. I can't wait for my lease to be over in 2004 so I can get myself a used 2002 4Runner. The best SUV out there.
OK, the comparison is Mitsubishi vs. Nissan. How are Mitsubishi resale values? I have both a 2003 Montero and a 2003 Murano on hold. One is big and the other is small but larger than a 2002 Pathfinder. I have been a Nissan person for years and I am in the market to buy a 2003. Tested a 2003 4-Runner and did not really like it. Is the Mitsubishi a quality ... Read More

In case no one has seen this website, there is a company called JAOS (http://www.jaosusa.com/welcome.htm) that makes a lot of dress-up parts for SUV's. The company (out of Japan) has teamed up with Mitsubishi to sponsor the annual Ramada Express Hotel International Rally (www.rallyusa.com). They make quite a few parts for the new Mitsubishi including up to 19" wheels. They also make a lift kit (2") and shocks for the 2001/2002. ... Read More
I was at the dealer today, and I saw a 2002 Montero Limited. There were a few changes I noticed. 1) chrome grille is now body color 2)mitsubishi symbols are chrome 3)chrome backing on side view mirrors are now body color 4)Chrome taillight is now body color. Some colors looked better in the 2002 style and some looked better in the 2001 style.

I too, am almost ready to buy a Montero Limited. I appreciate all the info on this forum. I'm just wondering about a few things.
