1998 Mitsubishi Mirage 2 Dr LS Coupe

Review

I purchased my Mirage LS new in May of 1998 and have enjoyed owning it ever since. My only regret is that Mitsubishi no longer manufactures the Mirage. I now have 120,000 miles on it and other than routine maintenance it has not cost me a dime. The highway mileage has never been less than 32 miles per gallon. It has been a great little car.

Favorite Features

The handling and acceleration are better than I expected when I bought it and the interior and body has held up quite well over the years. I guess the most amazing feature is that after eight years everything still works as well as they did the day I purchased it.

Review

The Mirage is extremely reliable car. I have over 97,000 miles on my car and have not had a single major mechanical problem, except for the poor quality brakes that came from the factory. I've kept up with the scheduled maintenance of the car and engine, transmission, a/c still run perfectly. My only complaint was the very cheap radio that came with the car. (It stopped working when the car was only a year old).

Favorite Features

Easy and simple a/c controls.

Suggested Improvements

Better wheel well cover, I had to replace mine and have seen other Mirages with the same problem. They tend to come off if the bottom of bumper scrapes a curb.

Review

I bought this car at 107,000 miles, It now has nearly 140,000. I have only had to replace a couple belts, otherwise no problems at all. Unfortunately it's probably gonna be totalled out by an insurance company for body damage.

Favorite Features

Easy to customize, practical, reliable

Suggested Improvements

I'm happy that the Lancer uses a 2.0 instead of this 1.5.

Review

The first 3 yrs, I put over 36k per yr on this car, most of that in the Appalachian Mtns. The Yokahoma tires that came with it lasted about 90k miles, and the seat covers still look great. I average about 40 mpg overall. It survived a deer collisionw/only front end body damage. It handles very well in snow on paved roads, but does not have the power to handle deep snow or icy grades on rutted dirt roads. It now has a bit of tapping when it starts, and the suspension is losing out to the rough dirt road where we live now. I'll have to give it up soon for something w/more clearance & traction, but it will be sorely missed.

Favorite Features

It is by far the best handling car I have ever driven & has been a lot of fun on those mountain roads. It has also been one of the most reliable. I track my expenses pretty closely & find I have spent only $3,637.86 in repairs & maintenance over 5 yrs, including the deductible for the deer damage.

Suggested Improvements

The front seats could be a bit wider, and the carpetting did not hold up at all. The cassette that came with the original AM/FM did not last out the warranty, and the dealer refused my offer to pay the difference for an upgrade to something with more amps (needed for a hearing problem).

Ill make this quick. The car for me was reliable until the engine blew out 2 years after i bought it. Completely fried the engine. Before that it was reliable. Slow as can be but good gas milage. The exterior isnt bad for an entry level car but the interior needs some work.

Favorite Features

30 mpg

Suggested Improvements

Interior could use a little bit more.

Review

I bought this car after driving a Ford Truck with a 302 engine in it for years. I wanted something easy on the wallet, with air conditioning, just to get me where I needed to go every day. So I traded the truck in on this new 98 Mirage. I got the base model 2 door 5-speed manual. All I had to do was get the windows tinted and put in a cd player. In the five years and 4 months I have owned this car the only time it has been in the shop - besides scheduled oil changes - was for a new starter covered under warranty during year 2. Of course, I miss the power, riding with 95 horsepower or so, but the reliability makes up for that.

Favorite Features

This car is a little more sporty than all other entry level cars. After 5 years, there are still no rattles, shakes or parts falling off.

Suggested Improvements

I only wished the back seat(s) could fold down to allow more trunk space as needed

Review

We've had this vehicle for about four years now, nearly 65,000 miles, without any problems whatsoever. Only work needed so far has been for routine maintenance. Good fuel economy at ~30mpg average city/hwy mix. Our mechanic even loves it, says it's very easy to work on.

Favorite Features

Very reliable, good gas mileage.

Suggested Improvements

Could stand some improvement in acceleration from low-speed or from a stop.

Review

I just bought a 1998 Mirage DE Sedan after I lost my first car in a wreck. What a great purchase it turned out to be! Wonderful appearance for an economy sedan. It's very refined and clean looking. Interior design is very eye pleasing and fit and finish is great. The performance is what surprises me about this car, it's very peppy for a 92 hp engine!

Favorite Features

Great gas mileage, great exterior and interior for the price, excellent braking, excellent performance for a 92 hp engine

Suggested Improvements

Aluminum alloy wheels only available on LS, I wish it had those over the hubcaps, ABS on DE models would have been a nice addition
