EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Now that the Ralliart has arrived, there's a broad range from which to choose which makes the Lancers a very compelling player in this now-crucial segment. Good looks, above-average dynamics, so-so fuel economy and a wide range of options should put the Lancer on many people's test-drive lists.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

The DE and ES Lancers' 2.0-liter 152-hp engine struggles to motivate the car or driver. And don't expect much fun from the paddle-shifted CVT automatic -- go with the five-speed manny-tranny if fun is a priority. Step up to the GTS's 2.4L 168-hp engine, or even better, the Ralliart's 237-hp turbo with all-wheel drive. Handling and fun-to-drive factors increase as you buy up the model line.

Comfort

RATING

A slight road noise/ride quality penalty with GTS and Ralliart models, but otherwise the Lancer lineup offers an excellent balance between ride comfort and handling. Ride quality is better at the bottom of the lineup while handling gains are found at the top. Rear accommodations are larger and more comfortable than supplied numbers suggest.

Function

RATING

The Lancer offers standard sedanlike sight lines, but the GTS and Ralliart's rear wings do obscure visibility. Gauges and HVAC controls couldn't be any easier, but the up-level Rockford Fosgate audio system (especially when combined with the optional navi system) requires some study and finger dexterity to master. Typical small car interior storage doesn't break any new ground. Its 11.6 cubic-feet trunk is adequate and the 60/40-split fold rear seats make it more useful.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The exterior borrows cues from Volvo, Alfa Romeo and, of course, previous Lancers to a very good effect. Even in its second year, the Lancer still doesn't look like a "cheap" car. The interior is only slightly less successful than the exterior, with its clean, attractive and functional features. The all-new unibody supplies a rigid foundation that permeates the solid feel of the entire car. Tight tolerances and solid door closings follow, and indicate better-than-average panel fitment and build quality.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Economical Transportation Reasonable base prices and tolerably priced options will keep the Lancer within reach of budget-minded buyers.

Daily Commuter The Lancer's comfortable ride and available hard drive nav plus Rockford Fosgate audio are well suited to deal with the daily grind.

Fuel Efficient The Lancer isn't the most fuel-efficient car in its class, but it's arguably better-looking, usually more fun, and better equipped than many of its competitors.

High Performer The Ralliart will take you more than halfway to Evolution-level performance for thousands of dollars less.
