2011 MINI Cooper Clubman 3dr Hatchback (1.6L 4cyl 6M)
Looking for a car that would seat four adults, but still be a "sports car" narrowed the choices real quick. We looked at competing small cars, but they simply did not come close to looking, driving or performing like the Mini. The base-engined Clubman with the 6-speed is more than adequate for civil driving and has enough punch when we want to get "sporty." The power is tractable and predictable. High-speed driving is effortless, as the engine creates good mid-range torque. Wind does not affect handling or power. Interior comfort is very good, too. The car draws good comments and everyone that rides in it finds that it is more than it appears, as in power, comfort, features, quality, etc.
Tractable engine power; ease of driving. Fun things like the hot/cold tempered glove box; the ambient multi-color interior lighting; clever storage spaces; chrome door handles; dampers on the hood and barn doors for "soft" opening and closing; body styling; gas mileage; general overall quality.
Improve accuracy of gas gauge and digital fuel mileage readouts.
During a recent vacation, we set the cruise control at 59 mph for a 45 minute trip on a county road. When we reached our destination, the fuel mileage readout had ticked up to 49.3 mpg! No kidding. We were tempted to keep driving to see if we could hit 50 mpg, but we had other obligations. Overall, on a 1700 mile trip we averaged 39.2 mpg, with a 74 mph average. This was about a percentage of 75/25 of highway/city mileage. Comfort for the whole trip was fine, too. Car has 10,000 miles on it.
Just an update here. The car has 26,000 miles on it and we still love it. No mechanical issues or anything else for that matter. I will retract my statement about the accuracy of the fuel gauge. The fuel capacity is larger than what I was originally lead to believe, so the gauge is actually pretty accurate. Several times we have let it get down to the last "segment" of the fuel gauge and were warned that we were down to about 60 miles before running out of fuel. Well, upon refueling, the tank held just a few gallons less than it actually holds. So, the gauge is more accurate than I originally thought. Great!
Having made the above posts, to clarify the 39.2 mpg, with a 74 mph average, that was on the interstate system. I do have a photo of the MPG readout at 47+ mpg when we were taking the slow drive. Hope to take one again when we touch the 50 mpg mark, which I truly believe is possible.
After one year of ownership, a faulty thermostat was replaced early on, and an oil pump solenoid this spring, all covered under warranty. Regardless of those niggles, the thrill of getting in and taking a drive is as exciting as the day we bought it. We have no regrets, as it is a sports car with some flexibility, which is what we were looking for.
