1996 Mercury Villager 2 Dr LS Passenger Van

Review

Because my Villager LS is 11 years old I looked around for a vehicle that was a superb as this Villager. Nothing handles as well nor has the appointments that this beautiful vehicle has. I say to Bill Ford resurrect a super vehicle instead of trying to invent a new one! This vehicle is by far above any that I have looked at in the same class. I will run this vehicle until it rusts out or cannot be repaired anymore.

Favorite Features

Handling, interior finish

Suggested Improvements

Rear seat removal could be improved.

Review

This van has been one of the best purchases yet. In three years of owning this vehicle we put over 70k on it and the only major repair was new ball joints ($500) and ac compressor ($450). I would recommend this vehicle to anyone starting a family. Decent gas mileage for a "mini van" there is just enough room for my wife and I, along with our three children ages 7,5 and 3.

Favorite Features

Simply reliable. During this year Mercury and Nissan(Quest) were manufactured on the same platform. Though it is a Mercury it has an Nissan engine in it. Even with 160k plus miles on it, it starts every single time especially with Ohio's weather conditions.

Suggested Improvements

4 door! In 98 I believe is when they started producing the 4 door version.

Review

This twin to the Nissan Quest is really a good vehicle. I bought it with 101,000 miles on it. I needed to have the trans rebuilt right after I bought it (went from 1st to 4th gear) cost a lot ($1800) to be rebuilt, but it has been good since. It really is quick. I went from an Audi A41.8t Quattro 5 speed to this. It has lots of power, antilock brakes work great. Got totaled, air bags did not deploy, but I didn't get hurt. I am buying a used 99 or 2000. I like the cargo/people space that it has to offer. Looks like a soccer Mom's car, but I'm now a Grandpa..LOL.I feel it is a good safe, reliable car. Lots of power and everybody is comfortable in it!! Rear A/c heat control did break.

Favorite Features

The power when you step on it..it goes. Safe, reliable.Stereo sounds great. Heat and A/C work quickly

Suggested Improvements

Power door locks don't always work with remote. More space from second row of seats to drivers seat.

Review

Owned the Villager for 10 years. Still drives and handles very well. Still in good condition after all of these years...no rust. I'd give it a 9 out of 10.

Favorite Features

Delivered CD changer - in lower front between driver & passenger is great. Lots of bells & whistles in powered vented windows in rear. Open tailgate window is cool for placing packages in the year and lots of ways you can move, fold seats. Today's vehicles, however are better at seating options.

Suggested Improvements

Newer vehicles come with rear entertainment systems, navigation and so forth. The Monterey and other minivans incorporate those features.

Review

I bought this car back in 1996, and I have never had any problems with it! It served as a family (of 4 kids) car, and even with that destruction, it has survived, and it's still amazing! Of course we had a few problems throughout the years, but we never put more than $200 into it.

Favorite Features

It gets good gas milage for a van, Its exactly like the Nissan Quest. Seats are comfortable, and you can take out the back seats to make it a huge storage area!

Suggested Improvements

None! This car served me and my family very well for almost 10 years!

Review

We bought this car used at 14K miles. Now has 185K miles. It is a great minivan and I enjoy driving it. It is great in all kinds of weather. Lots of room to move a kid to college. Only have performed routine maintenance. Truly the best and most reliable minivan I have ever owned.

Favorite Features

Driver seat adjustments. Back window opens to access cargo area.

Suggested Improvements

Move rear speakers from under the back windows. Front cup holders are too small.

Review

We bought the van used with 37K miles in 1998. Have been driving it for 6 years and it is still running strong. Van has been very reliable despite a few problems. Problems include door locks locking automatically, rear air blower went out, and oxygen sensor had to be replaced. It has lots of interior room and is flexible despite the middle seat being difficult to remove (rear seat slides up to create extra trunk space).

Favorite Features

Enjoyed the rear air blower until it quit working.

Suggested Improvements

Make the removal of the middle seat easier.

Review

I bought this vehicle new, and it was our family's first and only van. Now, after 155,000 miles, it still runs great. It still has the original exhaust system, and I have had minimal problems, only one was with the middle seat air console. Other than that, I would purchase another if I needed a van.

Favorite Features

Rides well, not too big, and the seats are comfortable.

Suggested Improvements

exhaust heat shield rattles at low RPM. DId from purchase, still does.

I've had this van for 5 yrs and wish they still made them, because I would buy another without another thought. It has provided reliability and performance above all other vehicles I have owned with very little maintenance required other then standard.

Power and performance, great visibility, handles very well in all conditions.

Review

The Villager has been fault free since purchase. I have replaced the shocks and struts. The strut mounts and some of the rubber components on the front end needed replacement. This is the only work I have had done over its life. The repair shop claimed he does a lot of Nissan suspensions of this vintage. The body & interior integrity are superb after this time and miles.

Favorite Features

Reliability & integrity. Still runs very smmoth with 90,000 miles.

Suggested Improvements

Front end suspension rubber components.
