EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

The Mariner doesn't offer the finest hybrid system, but for some, the flexibility of a well-priced SUV may be an acceptable trade-off.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Certain dynamic compromise have been made to maximze economy, among these are numb electric power steering, low-grip low rolling resitance tires, an odd initial brake pedal feel, and a droning CVT-induced engine sound.

Comfort

RATING

Droning CVT, and a pitchier ride than the standard model. Non-electric A/C compressor makes it hot at signals.

Function

RATING

Finicky buttons, especially with the optional NAV. Max A/C disables the hybrid stop/start, but most owners don't realize this.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The exterior design is somewhat dated, the interior looks functional, but suffers from a plasticky look, and stalks and buttons have marginal tactile feel.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Fuel Efficient Better fuel efficiency than most compact SUVs by nature of its hybrid system.

Daily Commuter Hybrid will help regular commuters spend less at the gas pump.

Economical Transportation Low-priced hybrid SUV.
