Ultra-refined powertrain. The power delivery is so smooth and linear that it almost seems as if the S550 is powered by a muscle-bound electric motor. The transmission's sport mode works best, as the shifts come right when you'd want them. Handling is excellent, almost nimble, making this big luxury sedan feel two-thirds its size.
Smooth, hushed ride, even at very high cruising speeds. Rear passengers enjoy limousine-like room and comfort.
Considering all the high-tech features on board, a fairly user-friendly layout. The COMAND controller is improved, and many controls are redundant. Frequently used climate control functions can be controlled by conventional dash buttons, steering wheel buttons or the COMAND knob. Adjusting the "Multi-Contour" power seats requires a bit more patience, but owners of the car should quickly acclimate. Night View Assist is amazing in its clarity, a definite asset while driving on dark rural roads.
Not crazy about the exaggerated wheel well arches, but fit and finish is superb. Cabin design and materials is classy and relatively clean, considering all the gizmos on board.
Luxurious
In every sense of the word -- the driver enjoys as stress free a driving experience as possible, while all occupants are soothed by the quiet, smooth ride, supportive seats and surplus of room.
High Performer
Great reserves of power in all the engines, acceleration, whether from a stop or from 60 mph, is potent yet smooth. Handling dynamics are more sport sedan than luxury sedan, giving the driver great confidence and adding a measure of fun to the drive.
Comfortable
A great car to be driven in, as the rear compartment offers immense room and features such as power sunshades for the side windows and rear glass, separate climate controls and power seats.
