EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

ML-Series SUVs handle well and can be fitted with a variety of stout engines. New this year is the 50-state Bluetec diesel, a very torquey engine that gets good fuel economy and runs as clean the cleanest gasoline versions. Inside, the MLs are ooze quality and luxury.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Strong engines produce significant power and torque. The new 50-state ML320 Bluetec turbodiesel is particularly stout, and it returns better fuel economy than the gasoline choices. Handling, braking and steering are quite good for an SUV of this size.

Comfort

RATING

The ML feels quite luxurious inside. There is plenty of space up front, and the rear seat has even more room. The optional air suspension rides too soft, as some of our passengers felt queasy after riding on straight roads. The standard coil spring suspension might be a better choice.

Function

RATING

Many aspects of the ML-Series are outstanding. There is a lot of cargo capacity and a sophisticated tie-down system keeps your stuff in place. There are a lot of clever features for the driver and passengers, too. But the COMAND system for the navigation and audio system is a headache to use, and the non-standard layout of a few other controls (shifter, cruise control) may be a problem if you other cars aren't Benzes, too.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The ML-Series SUVs are well-trimmed machines that give off a quaility look and feel. They cost more than the competition, but you do get more for that money.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Cargo Hauler Standard cargo space is quite big, and with the rear seats folded it's cavernous

Luxurious ML-Series SUVs give off an air of high quality and luxury, especially when equipped with leather and other amenities.

Towing Capable When equipped with V8 engine or the new Bluetec diesel, MLs can tow over 7,000 pounds.

Off-Road Ready The ML-Series SUVs come standard with a sophisticated full-time four-wheel-drive system. They don't have a low range transfer case, however, so rock-crawling is not their forte. Still, 1st gear in the seven-speed gearbox is very low.
