EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Elegance and a soft, quiet ride are near the top of its class. An optional V8 furthers the performance driving experience, as does the addition of an AMG sport package on the E350 and E550.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Handling is composed and secure in many situations, but not a threat to BMW. Engine choices include a 3.0-liter turbodiesel and several gasoline engines, which make the E550 the quickest car in its class. Around town the 7-speed automatic is always in the right gear.

Comfort

RATING

The interior is inviting and spacious with generous seat adjustment ranges. It rides a bit softer and quieter than its competitors. Pedal placement, wheel size and shifter position are exceptional.

Function

RATING

The audio system is hard to use. Other controls are well-located and look great, but don't break any new ground.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The interior is graceful and well-appointed. The exterior proportions and detailing are elegant and upscale.
