2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster: Top Repair Pick Up

April 11, 2013

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

By now we all know that a couple of little cables let go on the convertible top mechanism and we had them repaired at no cost. That was a first. It just so happened that when I went to pick it up, there was a slight problem: Dead battery, but this was not a first.

Way back here, we found out what happens when you leave the map light on. So what happened this time?

The technician who brought this big, yellow jump-starter over said somebody had left the ignition on, perhaps in the accessory position. After he cleared the codes, he told me I should drive the car for at least 15 minutes before shutting it off. Tough job, but somebody had to do it.

So this is the second battery...the first one was killed by a map light in a little over an hour and the second was killed by the ignition being left on? There is a low-level short somewhere in there or the starter is on its way out and drawing too much power.

These new cars with all their fancy battery-draining electronics... My wife's Optima sternly warns her not to use accessory mode because it apparently drains the battery quickly.

And as before I am amazed that a $100k+ 2012 luxury car lacks the battery rundown protection feature found in my $16k 1996 Pontiac Sunfire.

Should it have battery rundown protection? Sure. But the car is not failing to start after a map light is left on for an hour and change due to not having battery rundown protection.
