2006 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class SLK55 AMG SLK55 AMG 2dr Convertible (5.4L 8cyl 7A)

Review

The SLK55 AMG has to be one of the best values in a sports car. Considering that most used 05-08 SLK55's are under $30K, that is an unbelievable value considering the technology, performance and amenities if offers. Mine is getting up there in mileage, but the performance and engine are rock solid, reliable and I've had no issues whatsoever. I really can't think of another car in this price range that turns as many heads, is as much fun to drive and feels as nice as this car. This could be your only car - it's plenty comfortable, and spacious if you're not carrying cargo much. Fuel mileage is pretty bad, but worth it for the great performance.

Best Features

Without a doubt - the engine is what the AMG line is all about. The 5.5 liter engine in a car this size is a monster. It's thirsty (I average 16 mpg with heavy driving), but the power curve is incredible. The 7-speed transmission is excellent too - easy to use in auto mode, and has two different selectable manual modes (with paddle shifters). The styling still looks fresh and updated even though the car is 6 years old now. And, the car looks great with top up or down -- rare for any convertible. The interior is understated and simple, which suits the car perfectly. Comfortable bucket seats (airscarf is great!), nav is nice and large. Interior layout is excellent.

Worst Features

What a lot of these earlier reviews here don't mention (since their cars were much newer) is that when these SLKs get older, they develop tons of rattles, sqeaks, creaks and other noises regarding the convertible top. I can't even describe how loud and annoying they are, but they can be adjusted or eliminated at the dealership. Overall, it makes the car feel cheap, which is the antithesis of everything MB is about. My favorite solution to that is simply putting the top down. Other than that, and weak gas mileage, I have little complaints about this car. It's a great sports car that is worth every penny!

Review

I have had multiple BMWs and an Audi, but nothing performs like this car. The acceleration (and exhaust sound) and handling is awesome. If you can hang on, no corner is too fast. I put Michelin PS2s on and the handling (and red smoothness) is even better. I have 23k miles on mine and not a problem. I have finally found a car that drives/performs as well as it looks. I just hope MB is still making these when I replace this one!

Best Features

The acceleration, comfort and handling. I am six ft and fit very comfortably in this car, even on long trips. The retractable hardtop is quiet as a hardtop when up. The Airscarf and seat heaters really help keep you warm with the top down on cool days/nights. With the 7-speed, the mileage is impressive. I average 25+ on the highway at 80mph.

Worst Features

The paddle shifters on the steering wheel are easily hit when driving. On several occasions, I have downshifted unintentionally. Just something to be aware of. The ONLY other thing is the cup holders which retract from the center top air vent. They block the air flow and inconvenient. But come on...when the biggest complaint is the location of the cup holders...life is pretty good.

2006 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class SLK55 AMG SLK55 AMG 2dr Convertible (5.4L 8cyl 7A)

Review

Bought this car used with 12K miles on it. My previous car was a BMW M3. This car blows away the M3. The handling is unbelievable and accelerator very responsive. The 7- speed manual mode shifting is fun, but use the automatic when every day commuting. I can't say enough good things about this car. It's performance is as good as its looks!

Best Features

acceleration, exhaust noise, handling

Worst Features

cup holders in the most awkward spot over the front air conditioning vents. Needs rain sensing wipers.

Review

This car is great! I always enjoy driving this car since it is not my daily driver. Great looks, top up or down, great handling, it's got it all!

Best Features

Absolutely stunning, exhaust note, acceleration, braking, supportive seats, stereo, Airscarf, and just about everything else!

Worst Features

Nothing really, just hoping that bluetooth would be standard instead of being a $2000+ option
