Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsThough its 0-60 time is still impressive, there's a soft spot in the S550's acceleration just after it leaves the line. Still, this is a big car that goes really fast. Acceleration is virtually seamless and builds impressively as speeds increase. After the initial softness, there's a mountain of torque pushing the S550 down the track. Manual mode is required to launch in 1st gear, though the difference at the end of the quarter-mile is small. Won't hold gears at redline, which isn't a burden with the wide lattitude of power available.
Braking commentsThough braking tests produced inconsistent distance fade, pedal feel remained solid and consistent during six 60-0 stops. There was a minor but noticeable reduction in brake performance during our acceleration tests, which required repeated slowing from 110 mph to 30 mph at the end of the quarter-mile. Still, these brakes seem adequate for any normal use this car will likely see.
Handling commentsActive Body Control is largely responsible for the S550's character in both handling tests, where the car is flat and responsive regardless which mode (Sport of Comfort) it's in. Slalom: Overall, this is an amazing performance for a 2.5-ton sedan. Steering is intuitive and responsive and though stability control is instrusive, the S always goes where it's pointed. The electronics do their best to rotate the car and understeer is largely kept at bay. Skid pad: Comfort mode, which has more body roll, produced the best compliance and therefore the best grip. It's fairly easy to follow a line in the S, though doing so does require more commitment than I was initially comfortable with. The limits are defined by ESP here, as the throttle is eliminated long before the grip limits are found. Bottom line? The S will corner faster than you need it to in most any situation.
