OK, let's take a specific example. Back in 2006, I bought my dad a 750Li. The MSRP was slighly over $93k. I just built the same model on bmwusa.com and it came out to slightly over $90k. Bake in the inflation, it went down a lot. Which MSRP are you referring to? I'd like to see specific figures. I live in California. The only area S550s are selling well is probably ... Read More

It is something i hate to admit because I love the Mercedes-Benz brand so much, and the V12 is their elite car, but its a matter of fact. The one thing i didnt mention is that if you have a V12/AMG car who has had up to date service work done by a Mercedes-Benz dealership then you'd be good. And if you could buy the car from a Mercedes-Benz dealership you'd ... Read More

How appropriate that the unprecedented "sharing" will be announced on Valentines Day! The dates of Feb. 14, 2007 and Feb. 14, 1929 will both be remembered by both MB fans and Chicagoans as The St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Oh, I beg to differ. Where did the S-Class commercials come from? I thought the S was so incredible it didn't need to advertise? I love it! You change the subject when you're licked! Correct! The "Maybach" was a Mercedes when it was originally shown at the 1997 Tokyo auto show. What happened next was a classic case of German see, German does. VW and BMW got Bentley and Rolls so Mercedes figured they'd bring a prestigous name from past back to life. So at the last minute they changed the plan from calling it "The Maybach by Mercedes" to a seperate brand. Problem is ... Read More
I never understood why bringing Maybach back from the dead was necessary. It's one of those old brands like Pierce-Arrow or Deusenberg that means absolutely nothing to pretty much everyone in the 21st century. The M-B brand has enormous cachet. If they built a $300K Benz sedan and absolutely nailed the execution, people would buy. That's basically what the Maybachs are anyway.
It might be if the response is positive enough, but it will most certainly be toned down for production. The car looked as though it was initially to be a Maybach. If Mercedes does launch such a car atop of the S-Class, it doesn't bode well for the Maybach brand. Maybach is about to be killed by Bentley and Rolls with their rapid expansion in coupes and convertibles. M

Manufacturers want to ride brand new or redesigned models without any support for as long as possible. Similarly, dealers are much less willing to provide substantial discounts on brand new models. Consumers who want to be the first on the block to have a ... Read More
I agree of course that Lexus lacks a certain amount of prestige because they lace a V12, however I do think the LS600h (if it truly lives up to all the hype given around here) will partly make up for this. Now I'm reading that it won't be a $100K car, but will be 90K instead? So much speculation here and on the 2007 LS board. I'll just wait until they ... Read More
Problem is Mercedes, in the US, is clearly reactionary, not setting the market anymore. When it comes to SUVs that is clearly the case, but with their cars that isn't nearly as true. The CLS proves that Mercedes still has the ability to open a market or create one for a unique product. Now watch as others including Porsche follow. Whether or not you want to admit it the S-Class still ... Read More
No you're not alone in not liking the R-Class. I'm the one that is alone (at least on this board) in liking it. I don't see it as a "success", but dropping it though is out of the question. If sales never pick up over the production run it could be dropped then, or re-designed to better meet market demands. I can certainly understand you not liking the way it looks ... Read More
I'm glad you all like the pics. Not much work in posting them. The hardest part is taking them with so many people around! From the the 2007 model year onward all of Mercedes diesel cars will be legal in all states - according to all the recent press. They're just waiting on the mandatory clean diesel to be available nationwide. The S320 I was told will be a 2008 model. ... Read More
I just saw the new 2007 S class in person and was quite disappointed. The body shape doesn't look any better up close than it does in person. And I'm not a big fan of these "ATM" dashboards that seem to be growing in popularity. Mercedes stays on the path of poorly stlyed cars that reek of Chrysler and Cadillac Give me the current Audi A8 all day long over any ... Read More
I noticed that autospies had only the S550, S600, S65, and 4matic in their cy2006 timeline. When will a 450 appear? Will they sell a 350 here? Diesels? I asked all these question to MB reps in Detroit. I was told by one person that there will be no S450 and that there will be by another. The first rep came over during our conversation and said that there will be ... Read More
Have a look at what the editors think about the new S550: Full Test: 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550 - The new benchmark.
Well I'm back. I see I haven't missed anything, but 325+ posts about the same stuff we've been arguing about for years now it seems!! I may or may not go back through all of those posts to respond to some of the more curious items. Anyway, down to business. This year's NAIAS was without a doubt the best I've ever been too. The sheer number of new cars and stunning ... Read More
Hey, Merc1 doesn't even own a Mercedes but his posts about Mercedes and the other HELM's are always among the most articulate and penetrating on this thread. Just because I drive a 545i doesn't exclude me from posting here despite what you think. Since when is what someone drives a prerequisite to posting on the HELM board? How did you come into this conclusion, Howard ? Just when I thought we ... Read More
Interesting how you presume to know that our host Pat must be a "he." I would bet against you on that one, but that is really neither here nor there. The new Toyota LS460 will have a long way to go to displace the BMW 760Li in luxury and performance. Toyota is playing catch-up. BMW surely isn't. Hey, Merc1 doesn't even own a Mercedes but his posts about Mercedes and the ... Read More
What are everyone's predictions for 2006 brandwise? What new products does everyone's fav brand have on the way (that we somewhat know about that is)? I'll start with the two most popular first. BMW - 300K+ units for 2006? The 3-Series continues its rollout and will save BMW's overall sales picture from the pending downturn in 7-Series sales. (a new S is in town). E-Class and 5-Series will duke it out ... Read More
Why not just promote the heck out of the Bimmer 745/750 and S500/550 ? There is no need to bash Lexus to make anyone feel good... Good advice, now remember that next time you knock the S and predict the end of Mercedes-Benz. This is hilarious. The 2007 LS thread is nothing but a Mercedes this and Mercedes that thread. Lexusfans can't help but mention Mercedes whenever a new Lexus comes ... Read More
Actually, I seem to recall that Merc1 said he liked the styling (of the 07 LS) but would have to see more. I also believed he said he didn't like the fender flaring on the 07 S. I've been wrong before, though. Actually I don't have a problem with the 2007 LS overall. Sure it looks a little unbalanced in LS460 "L" size, but overall the car is a huge improvement ... Read More
I have a measurement device here that says the more Merc1 disses the car the more it bothers him. In his mind the LS has to copy something so now we have a 202" replica of a 189" car. Sure. The fact that Lexus could make all three of their cars LS/GS/IS look more or less alike proves that this is possible regardless of length. Did any of us try to ... Read More
As far as Lexus cars looking alike, if you look at the cars, in profile, they definitely look much different from each other. The GS has a more rounded profile. The IS is full of particularly sharp styling cues, and is heavily starched, without becoming an Acura TL. The LS falls in between. So I'm not seeing it either, Merc. A crease here or there, but that's it. I like the ... Read More
I see, still spinning with that MSRP nonsense. Earth to Mitsubishi1, MSRP has little bearing on true acquisition cost for Mercedes nowadays with all the discount going on. It's about as absurd as calling Maybach a $350k car when there is a $100k discount, and it's cross-shopped with a $170k Bentley by every would-be acquirer. MSRP is only relevent to the scribe who has no snow ball's chance in frozen you-know-where ... Read More
Well considering Mercedes the oldest carmaker around and new segments don't come along that often I'd say they've done pretty well to inpsire the creation of whole brands of synthetic cars with a copycat flagship to go along with it. Mercedes has proven itself time and time again over the years. Question is what segment has Lexus conqured? Lexus is the biggest wannabe in the automotive world, now switching their envy ... There's nothing wrong with comparing the production curve of any two car models. Just don't compare the first model year of one car with the winding down year of another, like what you were trying to do . . . that would be intellectually dishonest because we both know that cars sell much better in the early parts of its procution cycle. Again, you brought up the comparo between the CLS ... Read More
Interesting, your enthusiasm for the GL. What I don't get is why MBUSA hasn't mentioned bringing over the GL500 (would be a GL550 here). The new Slade has 403hp and various Land Rovers have 390-400hp so just a GL450 (335hp) seems a little weak to me. Imagine that that 335hp in a SUV as being weak. Clearly a GL550 (382hp) is needed imo. Anyway I think the R-Class stumbled because of ... Read More
Karl Brauer, editor-in-chief of Edmunds.com, has this to say about the styling of the '07 S: ... in 2006 automakers are showing too much flair, both literally and figuratively. Let's take the all-new 2007 Mercedes-Benz S-Class as an example. This model has long represented the pinnacle of the Mercedes brand. It's supposed to exude refinement and elegance because that's what S-Class buyers exude (or at least that's what these buyers tell ... Read More
$52k in the 1980's was 4-5 times the average new car cost, and it was not barely discounted at all. Today, few even know exactly how much the true market price for an S-class is, what with $7000 discount, subsidized money-factor and inflated residual. I have been seeing S-350 advertized on lease deals below $450/mo! That's barely 1.5x the average new car cost. I can't help but ask so what? A ... Read More
