    This is stretching it a bit. Mercedes-Benz sold over 650,000 units in Europe for 2006. Yes, they offer much more in terms of range than Lexus does in Europe, but to assume that the majority was "econoboxes" is a bit sore grapes.     Among the vehicles predicted to be least reliable by Consumer Reports, a total of eight Mercedes-Benz vehicles made the list, the most for any one brand. These are the S-Class (2006), CLS, E-Class Sedan, SL, CLK, SLK (V6), M-Class, and R-Class. The redesigned M-Class SUV and new R-Class crossover wee especially disappointing, with between 129 percent and 202 percent more problems than the average vehicle.

    Even running 87 octane at that rate has the diesel about $7 ahead. That adds up quickly over a few years of ownership. That last line is a joke.     So, it also makes sense to re-style the interiors of cars as well. Not an easy accomplishment, but Mercedes rose to the occasion. Lexus only tweaked the same old interior dash/center stack/console layout, while Mercedes S-Class interior represents a more recent and contemporary restyle. Contemporary to what?     I doubt if we'll see any 6-cylinder or even smaller V8 model from BMW, Mercedes, or Jaguar here anymore in their top sedan models.     Also, its only real competition at this point is the BMW X3, which it should undercut by thousands. I think Benz has backed off of the B-class in the US for exchange rate reasons, and Lexus, Infiniti, and VW are still working on their challengers.

    Well for me it has historically been Mercedes, Ferrari, BMW, Porsche and Audi. Recently Porsche and Audi have moved ahead of BMW on my desireability scale. Though I still want certain BMWs.     The previous S had a sleek tailored look that was very attractive. The new S seems to revert to the bulky style of the S preceding that one. First part of this is true - I agree.     The 1998-2005 GS was an experimental entry to a new segment for Lexus. The car certainly did better than R-class upon introduction.     I'd say you're right, very few if any S-Class/7-Series/A8 buyers are going to buy a Quattroporte as a direct replacement IMO.     Tagman, I think you should purchase the Portfolio because it's a rare opportunity and it's the most beautiful automobile on the road today. I especially like the car because it is 'eye candy' and it stands out more than anything from Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, and BMW. New XJ's have great reliability ratings (higher than European luxury sudans). Jaguar will rule the luxury automobile industry in 2006 and beyond.
