2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan E350 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 7A)

Review

I have owned the E350 sedan for a year and a half and alternate it between a 2009 S550 and a 2007 BMW 530i. I live in Costa Rica where the roads consist of endless pot holes and hap-hazard patches with undulating curves and steep inclines. The E350 has proven to be a very capable car and is the one I choose for the twisty mountain roads. It is not outright sporty, but extremely agile and confident on the curves and absorbs the rough surfaces without completely isolating the driver, no simple feat considering the coil suspension. The engine and transmission make short work of passing and climbing steep hills and the brakes don't exhibit fade on long downhill treks. Overall, highly impressed.

Best Features

-Well balanced car with great ride and handling. -Smooth engine has broad torque band. -Reliable, having gone through 12,000 punishing miles of rough serpentine mountain roads and pot-hole ridden, congested city streets without any problems. The car feels very well built, much more so than the previous 2 generations. -Solidly built -Intelligent Headlight Sytem (IHS) illuminates un-lit roads perfectly, especially around corners. The HID beams have great throw. -Plethora of safety features like Distronic and Blind Spot assist -The firm seats are very comfortable, especially for long trips. -Excellent Harman Kardon sound system. -Classically styled interior with warm ambient lighting.

Worst Features

-Command system interface looks like it is from the 90's. -Engine can do with more power, throttle should be re-mapped to eliminate the need to floor the pedal for quick response. -Some cheap interior finishes like faux aluminum accents and plastic dash. -Electronic gear shift slow to switch from drive to reverse and vice versa. -Foot operated parking brake, are you serious? -iPod/aux input connector in glove box and not the center console. -Trunk lid hinges protrude into trunk space and can crush objects underneath. -Panoramic sunroof screen should be solid a la S-Class and not translucent. It gets hot here!

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan E350 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 7A)

Review

I have owned three Mercedes E Class cars since 2000. Subtle cut backs on quality, trying to keep the cost down, did not distract from the overall performance. The ride, handling and performance are still first class, making the car a good value for the money.

Best Features

Perfect balance between ride and handling. Quiet, comfortable and responsive.

Worst Features

The trunk should be redesigned to eliminate the lid hinges from intruding into the luggage compartment and crushing items in its way. The trunk liner should be extended to fit against the outer side skin of the car. A set of golf clubs has to be placed at 45 degrees, making the trunk unusable for anything else. Make the leather standard.

Review

Have had two Lexus ES350 and one RX350. All were nice, but the RX wasn't the good quality as expected, and was boring. My wife loved the RX, so it took some prodding to change. So far we have 900 mi on the MB E350 and it is much more fun to drive with good quality. Will likely miss the Lexus free maintenance, but this car seems worth it. Very quiet, great music system, nav, etc. The panorama sunroof sold my wife, but it uses a screen to keep out sunlight instead of a solid cover. So in Texas the screen allows some heat through. Keep that in mind. A/C is extremely cold though, so no worries. The Command interface works well for me. Transmission lever is cool but different.

Best Features

Look, ride, power, quality, silence. Paddle shift transmission. Cruising gas mileage.

Worst Features

Make solid cover instead of screen for panorama sunroof option. Backup camera uses fisheye lens and is not good for safety in reverse. Ford truck has best camera and MB needs it. Front spoiler too low like a Corvette. Easy to damage on curbs.

Review

Traded my 2010 E350 in for a 2011, in black. Couldn't resist the 2000 loyalty cash, 3 years free Mbrace services including stolen vehicle recovery assistance, plus 1.9 % financing for 66 months. This 2011 has the LED daytime running lights, and the vehicle is much quieter than my 2010 was. Ride is also smoother, at least it seems that way. No problems with the 2010, and no problems with the 2011. I felt that the shifting was a bit buffeting, but when I told the service manager, he said that would go away after a few days when the computer gets used to the way I drive. Well, he was right - unbelievable. Still the best car on the road for the money.

Best Features

Harman Karman 640 watt audio system with HD radio/satellite radio/14 speakers - best sound system I've ever heard in a car; NAV system is terrific, especially with NAV Traffic from Sirius; electronic transmission is excellent with 7 speeds; bluetooth is the best I've experienced in an automobile; back-up camera a must and works like a gem; ride and handling are superior to the BMW's I've had; great acceleration with the 7 speed transmission; Mbrace is great to assist with opening doors and car locate system.

Worst Features

Leather should be standard, not optional, but I've said that for years and they just don't listen - but the MBtex vinyl feels and looks like leather - and wears and cleans up much better. Other than that that, the car is a dream to drive. I have had no problems with the Benz's I've owned over the years. I don't have wind noise either. This car as Continental tires on it and they are much quieter than the Pirelli's or Michelin's I've had on the other E350's I've owned.

Review

Great beauty from the get go. The overall looks are amazing. No one can say that it's just another mid sized car! It definitely has its personality. Drive is fun but you must learn to use the paddle shifters to gain optimal performance, don't expect it out of the box. Overall the drive is smooth, but a few strange sounds have come in the past couple of months when I have backed it out of my drive way making me thank God that I still have warranty.

Best Features

Dimmable interior ambient lights. Gear shifter Sound system (Harmon/Kardon)

Worst Features

Lower the weight, allow DVD playback while driving and adjust the gear shifting to get more power out of the engine.
