I know this may be outdated now but I just bought a 2001 E320 Snow-white Wagon in April 2011 with standard rear wheel drive, and a low 102,000 miles- it's like a dream! Powerful V-6 221 hp, 5-Speed Tiptronic shifter. I think it is the most enjoyable car I have ever owned as it appears well maintained. I live in the Portland Oregon area my entire life. Apparently some younger people ... Read More
When I bought my 2001 E430 from a MB dealer in Mar 2006, the MB service adviser said..." If you can spend the money...go with 2005-up models. if you don't, stay with 96-2002 style. Although 2003-2009 E-class are very beautiful and elegant cars, and one day I might consider a 06-07 black/taupe model, Pre- 2005 were terrible and unreliable to the point of destroying MB's reputation with its horrible brake by ... i bought my 2001 e320 new and still have it. it is a great car. change the oil every 10,000 miles, brakes as needed etc. but, nothing out of the ordinary in taking care of this car. after warranty do not go to mercedes dealer for service because dealers are expensive in maintaining any MB. there should be no poblem getting 200,000 miles on it...
Based on my experience I would NOT buy the Mercedes. "Routine" maintance ends up anything but routine. The minute you drive into the service center you can expect them to hit the $200.00 key. What should be a simple $25.00 repair to the instrument panel is estimated to cost $1,100.00. Mercedes must have used defective or inferior parts or poor enginering decisions when they built the 2001. I've tried "working" with ... Read More
My daughter is moving to LA to finish school and needs something safe to drive. We were considering a 2006 Cadillac CTS when we saw a 2001 E230 on the dealers website. Is it practical to buy such an old car? The price is affordable. Is this a car that is difficult to maintain? Is there much reliability difference between a 4 year old Cadillac and a 9 year old Mercedes? ... Read More
I live in a warm and humid climate and my steering wheel control switches have been literally melting for years. The material they are made of has become soft and sticky and are an obvious distraction to the driver as well as unsightly. The dealer told me it was only because of where I live that this happens and there is no recource with Mercedes Benz.
I have owned a 96 and a 2001 E320 and could never get more than 30K out of the pads and sometimes could get two pad sets out of the rotors, but not always. MB uses very soft pad and rotor material so that they wear away quickly and keep the heat build up to a minimum to prevent brake fade. One side effect is that the wheels get covered with ... Forget the dealer, go to your nearest trustworthy independent garage and get the same oil change done for well UNDER $100.. I"ve been bringing my 2001 E320 to a mechanic I've used for 15 years for all my cars once they are out of warranty and he charges me $70 for the oil and filter and resets the FSS at no charge. He charges just $70 because many of the E ... Read More
I recently traded in my 2001 E320 4MATIC wagon for a 2007 E350 Wagon. The 2001 E320 was a great family car and the pick-up was very exceptional for 4000lbs car. Hello, I am thinking about getting a 2000-2001 E430 4Matic - ideally something that's had one owner and probably has between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. My simple question is, would I be crazy to do this? First, a little bit about me... I have always been in love Mercedes cars since my dad had a turbo diesel in the mid 80s. (Probably my favorite car ever for various reasons.) I am ... Read More
I don't know how much oil the in-line 6 engine held back in 92. But the V-6 3.2 and V-8 4.3 hold about 8.5 quarts. Mercedes switched to Synthetic in a panic in 2001-2002 because the regular oil was not able to go to 10-15K that FSS was saying was the time to change the oil. The oil change in E-class is very easy. I even made a cut out in ... Read More
My wife drives a 2001 E 320. She only has about 40,000 miles on it. We have a Platinum Policy from Warranty Warehouse. They claim it's as good as a factory warranty. I own a 2001 E55 AMG. I know that Mercedes in North America does not recommend trailer hitches, for whatever reason. I just changed the anti freeze in my 2001 E430 with 90K miles. The MB coolant has such a faint pink color to it, it is hard to see in the expansion tank where the level is. The extended Federal Emissions Warranty for catalytic converters is 8 yrs/80,000 miles so it appears the catalytic converter replacement will be on your nickel. The other unit probably is not far behind. blckislandguy, some of your points are valid. However, I disagree about many of them. First, I think that the Mercedes interior is far, far better. I'm just pointing out, along with others, that repairs and maintenance will be a much bigger ticket than a Toyota or Honda.
Again, I would just point out that there are other alternatives for a "second car" than a cheap to buy, but potentially risky to maintain 1997 E320. For example, back in 2001 I bought a new Honda S2000 for $32,000, drove it for 2 1/2 years and 19,000 miles and traded it in for $22,000. This engine makes 268hp in the SLK. I don't expect the E350 to be quite that powerful, but you can expect at least 250hp, and the 7-Seed automatic also. Since the 545i, new A6 4.2. both have 325hp ... Read More
Don't know if anyone has heard of this before, but I figured I would ask here before taking our 2001 E320 in for service. The car was recently serviced (45,000 miles) and everything was fine. About a two weeks after the service was done, I started hearing a "beep" while driving the car. It sounds like an old cell phone message indicator, just a single beep that lasts only a few ... The "Starmarked" feature may be worth a couple of thousand as you suggest, especially if it takes your warranty up to 100k miles. If/when you call HBL, ask them if their E320 Wagon is Starmarked and if not, why. They have a reasonably good reputation here in the DC area, although I will likely buy from Euromotors if/when the time comes. The car you are considering probably had an MSRP close ... Read More

I agree w/ mbnut, $34,900 sounds like too much for a 2000 E320 4-matic Wagon w/ 41k miles. Perhaps my perspective is tainted because in June of 2001, I could have purchased a brand new 2001 E320 4-matic Wagon for $2,500 under invoice when Mercedes was offering factory to dealer incentives. As I recall, that worked out to about $46,000 on the one I had priced out - including the hard ... Read More
I have a 2001 BMW 530i that is coming off lease. As with many others, I am really put-off by the appearance of the new BMW 5 series. I am giving very serious consideration to the 2004 E320. I have spent only a few minutes behind the wheel of a 2004 RWD E320 -- not enough yet. I should have an opportunity for a more extensive test ride in the near ... Read More
To BEAM or to BENZ is up to you, but if you BENZ, I would think you could do a lot better than $40k for a 2002 E320. I checked the Washington Post and, unfortunately, they do not have many 2002's to choose from this week. A 2001 w/30k miles is listed at $31,500/ obo. My recollection is that $40k would be even be a high price for a 2002 E430, ... Read More
I also found another CAR article that compared the long-term prospects of the E class versus the 5 series and while conceding the 5 series is the better choice in terms of athletic ability, they concluded that the previous generation E class up to 2001 has had much better reliability and durability than the 5 series. They had a list of typical repairs and the costs for both vehicles. In general, ... Read More
in the BMW camp, at least for the 5 series, may be an issue if you have the Steptronic tranny. I've been reading that discussion (5 series) for a month or so and am getting the distinct impression that many owners are seeing failures in the 100K mile range. But the manual Getrag owners just don't ever see a failure. Doesn't appear to be much else going wrong with them, so ... Read More
Your story of the Benz brass in Germany is probably accurate. I have an office outside of Munich and the people there are very bright and articulate but they have a hard time understanding other cultures. They have a strong nationalistic pride which is a good thing but I know that it gets in the way of open minded decision making. The Germans feel that their way is always the best ... Read More
My opinion is that the new E55 achieves both better handling and a smoother ride than the previous model. I have a 2002 M5 and thought the previous E55 (neighbor had a 2001 model) was a harsher ride than my M5. The new E55 I drove briefly several weeks ago was noticably improved. I did not try the "comfort" setting, but the standard setting seemed quite good to me. I suggest ... Read More
I am looking to replace the OEM Michelin MXV4 tires that came with my 2001 4-matic wagon. The mnileage has been great (40,000)with a reasonable amount of tread left, but the tires have been plagued with punctures, leaks etc. MY Mercedes dealership recommends replacing with the same tire. Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement tire, I have considered the Michelin energy MXV4 Plus and the Bridgestone Potenza Re 950. ... Read More
Hi - I currently own a 2001 Volvo XC70 and the lease is coming to an end. My first thought was to get another XC, but after driving my parents E320 wagon and reading some reviews, I am contemplating buying a used E320 Wagon. One feature that I will definitely want is the LATCH system for car seats. Can anyone tell me when Mercedes started installing the LATCH into the Wagon? ... Read More
Well my neighbor who traded his 2001 E55 for a 2003 E500 is now considering an E55 and grabbed me for a "premier" test drive over the weekend. All I can say is that if you are hungry for power, this beast is a feast. As for the necessity of 469 horsepower and 516 ft lbs of torque, I was reminded of the "Field of Dreams" voices: if you build it ... Read More
The 2001 and on C-class Mercedes has the 6disk CD changer in the glove compartment
If you read the last paragraph of the letter, it looks like you must have paid up front to get this offer. My reccomendation is not to deal with the dealer. Instead talk to the Mercedes area rep. Ask the dealer for his number. If they won't give it to you, call the headquarters in NJ and get it from them. I had a problem with my 2001 C. I dealt ... Read More
Can someone please confirm this for me? I've been looking into getting a used E320 wagon, preferably 1999-2001 (amongst several other wagons), and it seems as if a CD player does not come standard, and if you get it as an option, it is not part of the front console, but rather back in the rear of the vehicle. This seems absurd for a high-end car like a Mercedes, considering that ... Read More
After all this time you're back! Really good to hear from you. The S62 was probably a guess on Automobile's part about what the next level of displacement would be on the AMG V12 S-Class. From 2001-2002 Mercedes sold a S63 in Europe, it was a normally aspirated 6.3L V12 with 444hp. I'm sure they didn't know that the next AMG V12 would be called the "65", which is actually a ... I'm ready to make the jump to 17" wheels on my 2000 E-320, which came with 16" wheels. I like the look of the Mercedes wheels that came with the sport package on the 2001 E-Class models. Does anyone know a dealership that will discount these and ship them to my tire store in Atlanta? Any other thoughts?
Mercedes are purchased from dealers not from Mercedes. Every dealer is an independent business and determines its own sales price. Several months ago I posted my method for purchasing cars which has worked well for me. Last week I bought a new volvo for a friend for $266 over factory cost which is determined by subtracting incentives and holdback from the invoice price. Holdback is 3 percent of MSRP on a ... I kinda figured how those tests would come out, Mercedes just isn't going to deviate from the straight-line stability theme long enough or loosen the grip of their safety systems to match those other cars once the road starts to twist. I'll do a summary. Most issues relate to the E in general...however I have had multiple issues on the drive train. I have a 2001 E320 4Matic. First time returned without problem fixed stating no trouble found and lectured me on how the computerized climate control system works (think I set a blood pressure record ... Read More
Yes the C-Class was totally redesigned for 2001, but for 2004 it will get a "facelift" not a total redesign. You know like the S-Class got this year and the E-Class got for 2000. With the new E-Class Mercedes seems to have hit the nail right on the head. It's good looking inside and out, of higher quality than the previous car and everyone seems to love the new Airmatic DC ... Read More
My 2 cents on this issue. I have the ventilated seats on my 2001 S500. They are nice in the summer, yes. But not really necessary, as stewart said well, above. The A/C will do. Only after I played a pick up game and got really sweaty did the cooling/drying feature became an asset. The massaging seats are pretty worthless. You will not feel them after a month of use. If ...
