Review of the 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

  • The E-Class offers state-of-the-art safety and performance technology wrapped in a somber but classy body.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Distinctive good looks, lots of standard and optional safety equipment, available all-wheel drive, refined powertrains, rock-solid engineering.

  • Cons

Stately rather than sporty, gimmicky COMAND system option, no manual transmissions available.

  • What's New for 2001

E320 sedans can now be ordered with the sport package, which includes AMG aerodynamic enhancements, specific foglights and 17-inch wheels…

Lovin' it!!

Vehicle: 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E55 AMG Rwd 4dr Sedan (5.4L 8cyl 5A)

It's 01/2010, my car has 83,000 miles on it and it performs / rides like new. Drove from Houston to Florida straight through at 80-100 mph and still got 25.5 mpg average for the trip...hard to beat! Repairs can get costly, but the performance is worth it! (Get a warranty if you can) I'd recommend this car to any car enthusiast!

Not too bad

Vehicle: 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E55 AMG Rwd 4dr Sedan (5.4L 8cyl 5A)

While under the generous 4 year 50K mile warranty I had lots of problems including driver's side mirror falling off due to cheap metal. The rear door regulator, transmission leak, cup holder, power headrests (twice) motor, lug nuts rusted away, and battery. But since the warranty was over it has only been an H20 sensor and the Teleaid antenna broke off. The styling is timeless and the ride feels like in an electric car. The motor is smooth along with the ride. There are no child locks for the rear doors though. Uses synthetic oil that needs to be changed every 10,000 miles. It gets better the longer I seem to go. Expect about 18 city and 28 highway

Fun & easy to drive

Vehicle: 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E55 AMG Rwd 4dr Sedan (5.4L 8cyl 5A)

Wonderful 5.5L motor that'll fun forever. Problem with this car is build quality and electronic failures. Also watch out for rust. MB USA will not acknowledge serious rust issues their cars even though hundreds of thousands of well maintained MB cars are rusting. Easy to drive, if you don't step on the gas it drives just like a regular E-class. Great commuter. Much more comfortable than BMW M5. Depreciation very poor, same year M5 costs $10-12k more.

I own a new 2001 E320 (it happens to be a wagon) that has had a strange, intermittent noise coming from the front of the car since the day I got it. This noise occurs only during modest acceleration?...

Is it my imagination, or has the E-class had some significant price creep over the last few years, culminating with the new model? It seemed to me that the E-class and BMW 5-series were pretty close ...

I thought some of you might like to know how things finally turned out once we got a new E Class after all the problems we had with the 2001 C 320 which I wrote about last month. We like the new car?...
