1990 Mercedes-Benz 300-Class Wagon 300TE 4MATIC 4dr Wagon AWD

Review

I bought the 4-matic wagon used at 180,000km and had immediate issues with the transfer case, transmission and drive train generally. The ultimate solution to the AWD problems was to remove the front drive shaft. Once over initial maintenance corrections the car settled down to being very reliable and comfortable transportation. Currently it is over 430,000km and still going. The body is just now beginning to show some rust nineteen years after it was built. What a great car!

Favorite Features

Great ride, fast on the highway, comfortable and a great workhorse. Although not recommended I did put a class one hitch on it which has been highly useful. An absolutely bullet-proof engine.

Suggested Improvements

The later 320 models with the bigger engine perform better. The 300's acceleration is leisurely.

Review

Compared to other cars I've owned this car is the best in style (I at least like it), quality, and dependability that I have ever owned. While it occasionally does have its problems, they are very few. I bought the car with 160k miles and now I have over 220k. It seems to be like the energizer bunny cause it just keeps going, & going, & going, with very little maintenance or repair costs. I'm sure if I took better care of it (ie: tune- ups, oil changes, etc.), it would still be like new, although it never has given me any major problems and still runs like a sports car.

Favorite Features

It's a fire engine red color which seems to really get attention. I love the engine "pep", memory power driver seat, the way the cruise control works - which is very easy to traffic, the sunroof, and the 3rd seat.

Suggested Improvements

The suspension is very strange and the front would sometimes shake as if a wheel was loose or something. I was told over & over that nothing was wrong (ie: alignment or balance). After going through sets of Michelin's & Continental's, it finally stopped when I put a pair of Korean made Hancook's on.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 300-Class Wagon 300TE 4dr Wagon

Review

I bought this used with just over 85000 on it,in very good condition. Main complaints: no horsepower. It won't get out of its own way, especially with a load of people and luggage - almost dangerously slow in traffic. Gulps gas like you wouldn't believe, and the high priced stuff, too. And when it breaks down, which it will, it will cost you a couple mortgage payments to fix it. I won't be buying another MB.

Favorite Features

Nice interior, all wheel drive.

Suggested Improvements

More reliability, more horsepower, better gas milage.

Review

I have owned 7 MBs, and I think pretty highly of them. However, they have shortcomings that prospective buyers should be aware of. My 300TE is a handsome and highly functional car. Build quality is superb and I love the general comfort level. Long trips are a joy. The biggest downer with Benz ownership is the expense of fuel, repairs, and maintenance. "No kidding, mister, it's a premium luxury car." My wagon burns premium fuel only and gets about 18 mpg. I owned two Tahoes that cost less to fuel (regular gas). Parts and labor costs will make you cry. Routine maintenance is extremely pricey. The saving grace on all my Benzes has been terrific resale value. That is what keeps me loyal.

Favorite Features

Classic styling that ages slowly. Outstanding build quality. Material quality and durability. Very high comfort level. Outstanding resale value.

Suggested Improvements

Rotten fuel economy on premium fuel. Sky-high costs for parts and labor. Sluggish all-around performance by modern standards (just call it stately). Notoriously bad stareos until recent years.

Review

I have owned this car for 9 years now and have enjoyed every moment of it. My benz is always reliable. Its not very fast accelerating but it can get go fast if you want it to. Its got the wonderful mercedes control factor as well. The stearing is great. My only complaint is that if something does go wrong, its not cheap to fix. I also have a 96 Infiniti I30 and a 99 Chevy Tahoe. The Benz is my favorite of them.

Handling

Suggested Improvements

They should increase the acceleration.
