Just acquired a 2002 Mazda Tribute ES V6 with 103k miles. Runs great it seems. Only issue is that it occasionally will cut off or stall when put in reverse. Starts right back up with no problem. Check Engine light is not on. No oil leaks. No sucking noises. Can't find any bad hoses. I've skimmed the postings on this and other sites. Seems it might be "Idle Air Control Valve" ... Read More
Hi there, Am new to this forum so please forgive me if I'm doing this all wrong. I have a Mazda Tribute 2002, 122k on the clock. For about the last 3 weeks or so I've noticed that when I first use the car during the day (morning or afternoon) whenever I turn the wheel I hear a rubbing/friction noise (not a whistle), as if something is grinding on something else. ... Barbra -- $2000 sounds about right, maybe even low from $2500 - $2800 depending on the damage. Understand that with a factory fix and parts, you may be set up for the same problem 70k to 100k miles out again. Factory parts and design (Ford transmission) is what it is. I'd be more inclined to find or stick with a mechanic or shop that is off the trail from a dealership ... Read More
Have had a 2001 Mazda Tribute V6 ES 4WD since 2002 (bought it coming off of a one-year lease.) Handles well. Powerful engine for a small SUV, but growls loudly. Internal wind-noise is excessive. Mileage started out around 24 hwy, then gradually dropped down to 19-20 hwy. Drivers door-latch mechanism (inside door) broke. Rear hatch door would not open (internal release froze up.) Rear hatch window wiper motor froze up. AC ... Read More
My son's above referenced car (truck?) is having serious problems with his transmission. The reverse went out completely. No one has dropped the transm. to examine it, but a prof. has it now and after driving it around says that at about 100k miles these trannys fuse together in spots where the ventilation is not good. He would be afraid to take it out on the street to check the other ... Read More
As mechanically uniclined as I am, I have not consider much aside from what some people have told me it might be. Where is the starter located on the Mazda? Is it an easier fix then the alternator?
If your battery is charged then a faulty alternator is not going to give you starting problems. Have you considered the starter, or connections between the starter and battery? Whe you say 'refuses to make any noise' I am assuming the starter is not cranking.
My 2002 Mazda Tribute has served me well over the five years I have owned. Due to unforeseen circumstances with other cars, I have had to put roughly 120,000 miles on it the past 16 months. It is currently dead in my driveway at just over 200,000 miles. Last summer I had the transmission replaced and just recently had some computer work done on it. The latest problem is that it ... Transmission fluid levels have always been OK. After noticing some rough shifting I had my transmission fluid changed, March 2010, 144.500 miles. Two months later, May 2010, noticed a lot of fluid under my car, green and pink around edges. My cooling system for transmission had failed. Repair was for transmission fluid in radiator, new radiator, upper and lower hoses, flushes, and refill of fluids, plus labor $743.00..the concern was that ... Read More
Good call on the push nut. I have a 2002 Tribute that also had the transmission cable fall off. Between the tow truck operator and this post I was able to fix the cable on my own. To be honest, the engine sounded like a race car. I put ... Read More
I have had the throttle cable problem in my 2002. It was not related to braking. You are clearly experiencing a problem with the braking system, most probably associated with the ABS since your hear some pump-type of noise from the rear end. I am new to this board. I have been reading through the postings. I purchased my 2002 Tribute on 12/1/01. (Manufactured in 11/01) On 5/3/02, my battery died. My Tribute has stalled out on me 3 times. Each time I have taken the car in. The first time they updated the computer software (6/21/02). The second time they replaced 3 sensors (8/14/02). Took the car back to the dealer on 8/20/02 ... I've been looking in on this board since the summer of 2001. At that time, my wife and I were strongly considering buying a Tribute (the test drive almost sealed the deal for us) until I did some research on the web and found out about the stalling problem. We then decided against purchasing the Tribute because of this issue. I still look in on this board from time to time ... Read More
Hello, I bought a new 2002 Tribute ES a while back and bought the 'special' pollen air filter. It's called a "cabin air filter" (part number 0000-8M-G01). Anyway, I finally got around to installing it. When I popped open the "filter box cover," I was expecting to have to have to remove the old one; however, there was nothing there, just an empty space! My friend beleives that my Tribute was ... Read More
"I think he really drives a late 80's Chevy pickup." And I've got the beer cans flying out of the rear all over Texas highways to prove it!! And of course, the gun rack showing very clearly to all them Yankees that invade my soil. "He is entitled to his opinion, no matter how little value it now holds with a lot of folks around these forums." Now you've done it ... Read More
I am the owner of a 2002 Mazda Tribute LX. I have 1,500 miles on it and it stalled in traffic going down hill. I am thankful for the posts here as I did bring it to the dealer and they appeared to be honest about the situation. Stating that everything checked out on the TSB and they did nothing. I guess now there is nothing to do but wait and ... Read More
I do have the complete Mazda Tribute TSB for the stalling problem--but it's 8 pages long. I'm going to recreate a lot of it here, and you can let me know whether you need more. I'm not even sure they'd let me put that much material up on the mesage board. BTW: I live in WV where the mts. aren't nearly as big as CO, but roads are typically narrow, steep, ... Read More
I took my 2001 Tribute down to the local Mazda dealer after it stalled. They said it might be a few days so they arranged a rental for me. Three days later they called and told me my Tribute was fixed and ready to be picked up. They told me that a faulty air control valve was to blame. They said it was a rare problem but one they knew how ... Read More
I requested the documents from NHTSA that are on file for their investigation into the stalling issue. I have the hard copy documents that were availble as of April 18, 2002. I do not have subsequent documents. NHTSA's web page does not appear to be up to date in the defects investigation section. The customer complaints do seem to be up to date. If you check the defects investigation section, you ... Read More
I am considering a purchase of a Mazda Tribute. I have read the NHTSA site and I have contacted a dealer to inquire about the situation. 1. I understand that there may be a TSB providing direction on fixing the problem. It involves reprogramming the PCM on vehicles which have a more recent reprogrammable PCM. It involves replacing and reprogramming the PCM on older vehicles that do not have the reprogrammable ... Read More
Sorry scape2 but you are incorrect in your response. I am not sure where you got your information but it is not accurate. For the record I am positive I have a 2002 Tribute and my PCM is a brand new one (I saw the information on the machine at the dealer) so the problem still exists. Today I took it by the dealer and he installed part #1F22-13-210A which is ... Read More
Ok I am not one of the "hysterical" owners but FYI I bought a 2001 Mazda Tribute last February. Had the engine cutoff problem 6 times and had every tweak known to man done by the Mazda dealer. Finally, Mazda agreed to trade it out for a 2002 which I got two weeks ago. The engine has cut off on this one twice already. This is rediculious. Period.
I have a 2002 Tribute will 2800 miles on it. The first two times it stalled I thought it was a fluke. The third time it stalled I took it to the dealer and they replaced a relay and re-programmed the computer. The fourth time it stalled I took it to the dealer and they replaced the throttle body, gasket and valves. My service rep admitted that this was a know ... Read More
I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute LX, and every time it is below freezing and I start the truck, my battery light comes on, and the electrical system flickers. I checked the connections and they are tight - I'm about to take it to the dealer and ask for a new battery, but first wanted to see if anyone else had come across this problem. Also, I was wondering if anyone ... Read More
