I chased the same probllem and have the solution. My Tribute has 153,000 miles. 1. Replace all the intake manifold gaskets. Comes in a kit. Don't cheat. Good call on the push nut. I have a 2002 Tribute that also had the transmission cable fall off. Between the tow truck operator and this post I was able to fix the cable on my own. All you need is a 5/16ths push nut. It fits right on the end of the little transmission post as the tranmission post has a little groove which the push nut fits in perfectly. ... Read More

Did you have to go to Mazda to get the bushings? I know that Mazda will only sell the complete cable assy and not the retainer separately to the tune of $80. Since the cable popped off I need to find a diagram of the assy to see how bushings, cable, etc go together. What style of retaining ring did you use? Thanks
I spent $12 to fix mine. What happened was that the linkage pin retaining ring came out, letting the cable and the bushings come out the pin. All I did was put new bushings ($6) and retaining ring ($6 for 102 pieces).

I had the same problem with my 2001 Tribute. My solution was replacing the lower intake manifold gaskets. After doing so my idle problem stopped.

Ok, the transmission end of the cable has a plastic press fit part that wears out allowing it to slip off of the shift arm receiver . You can pay $80 plus labor to refit a new cable that will fail again the same way, or it seems your mechanic has a way to replace the bad end of the cable with a better clamp (hopefully). Thanks for the information. I replaced my upper and lower intake manifold gaskets a week ago and have not had any idle problems since. The lower gaskets were really bad and most likely 3 out of the six were leaking.

I had the same issue; car is just under 100k miles and had this issue for about 4 months. Mechanic found that the intake manifold gasket was leaking. Replaced upper and lower intake gaskets and problem nwas fixed. Cost was about $50 in parts and $180 in labor.

did you notice the problem only happens with a certain key? the microchip inside the key may need to be reprogrammed, you can do this yourself, it takes you step by step in the manual
my brother's zx2 escort has this same problem. It turned out the battery connector has some problem so it wasn't conducting very well. He replaced the part and it has started fine after that. The big cable that is hooked up to the battery terminal and the connector is what I'm talking about.

Does anybody have this problem with their 2001 Mazda Tribute, 4 cylinder, manual transmission? I drive the car around town and it runs fine. I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute with 40,000 miles. The power steering pump starting making crunching noises. The noises get worse if the car idles and gets hot. Mazda wants to charge me $700.00 to replace the pump. I had the fluid flushed and that helped a little. I just bought a 2001 Mazda Tribute with pretty low miles. I made a great deal and I really like everything about it but it has a lot of road noise. Not so bad around town but over 50mph and I think that it's pretty loud for a newer car. Anyone else think that their Tribute is a little loud?

I think that my problem has finally been resolved after multiple trips to the dealer and a transmission flush. I had a BG transmission flush at a local shop in early April, but the hard upshift and shudder did not get any better. I am the lucky owner of a 2001 Tribute (V6). My Tribute was recently recalled because of a problem with the seatbelt latch. Now a recall for the engine stall. Add that to the presently illuminating check engine light and I am in great shape. At least Mazda is finally doing something about the stall issue.
