    I forgot to ask, mazda tells me my protege does not have a fuel filter, but the place I get my oil changed at says it does, do my 2003 es protege have a fuel filter and if so, how do we change it

    I will never buy a mazda again. It is a shame as I did like their cars. I see many 2003 proteges with the same rust spots over the back wheel wells. I will continue to go to the mazda dealer where I bought it to get parts and I park right where everyone can see.

    You might want to get it scanned for a problem code to narrow down the possibilities. You mention spark plugs being replaced; did you also check the condition of your wires? Finally, a common problem in the Mazda Protege is a dirty / clogged EGR valve; it may be worth a look see.

    I bought my 2003 MAzda protege DX more than a year ago. When i bought it the i guess shifter (i know thats wrong but the part with "P R N D 1 2") was cracked. I was wondering if anybody knew where to get a new one and how to replace it. It has been bothering me for a long time.

    Hmmmm.....presuming you testing for voltage at the solenoid with a test light, I'll take a stab at a blown fusible link in the engine bay. Some starter solenoids are fused this way. Do you have headlights?

    You are right rust is an issue for the 2002 and 2003 Proteges. Mine started appearing after the third year. I took some preventative maintenance (annual rust proofing) and repair (had rust removed from wheelwells in 2005). Now, over eight years old, my P5 looks very good and should last another couple of years (fingers crossed). Since the Mazda3 replaced the Proteges starting in 2004 the problem may be occurring there. ... Read More

    Actually it doesnt make any sound at all doesnt crank, fire. Thanks. I'll try knocking on the starter next. Will check oil again think it was at the most low. Seems like i heard a small noise when it quit originally. Thanks for the response appreciate it. Will report next results. Thanks.

    Hmnmm Try tapping the starter while someone is turning the key. How was the oil level? Sounds like a crank sensor was knocked off. Its located atop the bottum main pully.     You need a pressure gauge and proper fittings to break into the fuel injection rail. Then you need to know the specs at cranking and at idle speeds. It's best to have a repair manual to talk you through these procedures, or go to a shop and have the test done. It should read 30 - 36 psi with the fuel pressure regulator connected and 39-45 psi with the fuel pressure ... Read More

    Yeah but I'd be more inclined to test for a bad fuel pressure regulator, also basic tune up. A fuel filter would have to be pretty clogged up, drastically so.

    he High Pressure and the Low Pressure Fuel Filters are located in the Fuel Tank on the Fuel Pump Unit, to replace either Fuel Filter you must remove the Fuel Pump from the Fuel Tank.

    45,000 miles. Just changed the oil and rotated tires tonight. 5w30 synthetic and Mazda filter. Still have more miles to go on the original brakes. No defects or problems with this Protege other than an emissions recall and that did not affect how the car ran. This is a fun car to drive. More fun than my Mazda6 and more fun than the Mazda3 IMHO.

    My 20002 Protege has developed rust around the windshield ... The windshield was replaced in 2003 This can easily happen if the installers are not careful and scratch the paint. Scratches could have been hidden under the black trim and then emerge several years later as paint bubbling or blistering. Was the window repair done by a Mazda dealership or someone else?

    2003 Protege DX. My mileage around town short trips has been from 21 to 24 mpg. Only made two interstate trips of real distance (2000 miles round trip). Got from 25 to 27 on each tank full. I have the automatic for which I was thankful during a hour long traffic jam in Atlanta.

    The 2003.5 MSPs have all been built. Production on the 3 started last month. We should see the 3 in North America around November. 3s will be built in Hiroshima and Hofu, Japan in the same factories the Mazda builds the current Protege and Miata. I would expect similar reliability to those vehicles, i.e. very good.
