Yeah I thought so. It's weird though how both just seemed to fry.
Your suggestion worked! Thank you!
For me the problem was that for whatever reason, the low beam filament in both of my headlight bulbs burnt out. I replaced the bulbs and it worked fine. It actually happened to me again during another wet day. It hasn't done it since, but take a look at your bulbs and look at the filaments. If replacing the bulbs doesn't work then I really don't know what to tell you. ... Read More

I have a 98 mazda that had a squealing belt one time. I had the alternator in a speciality shop and the guy told me that the alternator is just barely the right size for the demands on it. So the belt has to be "banjo" tight or it will give problems. AFter it was tightened up then it didnt' give a problem anymore.

Hello...I recently just bought a 2001 Mazda Protege ES and I am having problems with the fog lights. The fuse closest to the driver side of the car keeps blowing. I have gone through 6 (15A) fuses. I try turning on the fog lights and they just flicker and go off which usually means the fuse has gone. Any ideas? Or should I take to dealer?
The high beam bulbs are also the low beam bulbs Interesting. I guess Mazda changed this in 2002 because my Protege has separate bulbs for high & low beam.
My little yellow lights work and so do my high beams. The high beam bulbs are also the low beam bulbs. I checked the fuses and they are good. I took out the relay from under the hood in the fuse box and the high beams and low beams didn't work. It was a wet and rainy day so maybe I hit a puddle and got something wet? 2001 Mazda Protege ... I keep reading the same answer over and over again... "the air conditioner compressor is going to run to remove moisture from the car's interior that otherwise would cause your windshield to fog up". Compressors DO NOT remove moisture. They condense gas!!! What condenses moisture is the cold coils running in the "evaporator" near the cabin's fan. But lets forget about this technical detail... Some Japanese cars (many Hondas in fact) have so-called "interference" engines where loss of the timing belt may cause considerable damage. Protege engines are of the "non-interference" type where loss of the timing belt will only cause the engine to come to a stop, with no damage.
Contrary to the response posted after yours which suggests driving the car until the timing belt breaks, it has been my understanding for many years (I am on my second Protege) that if the timing belt on a Japanese car breaks it causes serious damage to the engine (min. $2000 Cdn). -- better to fork out the $300+ and get it replaced NOW. I just picked up the new Sport Compact Car mag and they have a test on the new Neon SRT-4. This car is the Hemi-Cuda of sport compact cars. 5.8 sec 0-60, 14.1 1/4 mile. It put 223 hp and 250 lbs-ft of torque to the FRONT WHEELS on SCC's dynojet. It was a prototype, but DaimlerChryler engineers said it was within a couple percent of production numbers. $20K. This car ... Read More
That pic of the 03 Protege looks like it could be the new P5 for 2004/2005. The P5 was built in 2001 as a 2002 model, so Mazda might bring out the new P5 in 2006 assuming a 5 yr cycle or along with the new 2004 Protege. I certainly can only speculate. Looks ok to me. I like it! Now has anyone seen what the rededigned 04 PRO looks like? ... Read More
I'm sorry Dale, I was refering to the city in Alabama, not the country. :-D The Sri Lankan, Alabama Police Department uses the 2001 Mazda Protegé ES to patrol their fine city. -larry
isn't out there! All cars have their problems, good design ideas, bad design ideas, things we like, things we don't like. We buy what we can live with for a while, and still look for something better or hope will be better. Like Newcar31, I still DO NOT like the Protege's ride. It is uncomfortable, if not jaring, over patched roads and has a tendency to bobble front to back. What ... Read More
When I test drove a 2001 Focus ZTS, I found the ride to be quite nice. Firm, but not overly so. I like the Protege's ride better, but my wife probably doesn't. The problem I had with the Focus, which the Protege does so much better, is the seats. I hope the Procus gets Mazda seats, and not Ford. The whole Procus thing kind of scares me anyway. I fear that ... Read More
I had problems with both autos in my Proteges. In the 99 DX, it would kinda slip when downshifting from 3-2 when passing. The problem started to get more prominent, but the dealer could never make the car do it. I traded the car at 38K, and they hadn't found any problems up to then. On the 2001 ES, the transmission would produce an audible squeak when shifting. The Mazda dealer ... Read More
I have a 2001 and just got a brochure from Mazda for the 03: Changes so far the 03s are getting on ES trim: 1. Std. ABS w/EBD 2. Std. 16" alloys 3. Std, side blinkers like on Euro cars 4. Std. leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob 5. Optional Manumatic tranny 6. New blus colour added (looks like the MP3 blue). Get them while you can. For 2004 Ford will ... Read More
I am just as interested in the next Protege (Mazda3) as you are because it will be my next car. Please post any sites were you have found pictures or info. Here are some sites of mine. This one has commentary. http://www.telusplanet.net/public/rbhutson/miata/arc_2001/musings_v7-09.htm This one has an extremely small picture (sketch) http://www.busybeetoys.com/scoop/scoop-edn31.htm Click on "323" on this site and the wagon at the top is a next gen Protege wagon (I think) ... Theparallax, where did you find them? I've been looking all over for that style, do they make them in 15" and four-lugs? Sorry Meade, when I looked at the '00 Proteges I felt it was a nice little car but it could be better. In 2001, Mazda made the changes the '00 lacked: The crease in the hood, chrome inside door handles, better seats, nicer trim on doors and dash, and ... Read More
That Canadian "World of Wheels" web site (I referred to in a recent post) prominently displayed "July 2002" on top each of their web pages, so I thought the material was current. Sorry. Apparently their road tests were of the 2000 Mazda Protege LX and the 2001 Mazda Protege5. Nice favorable write-ups in any case.

My question to MazdaUSA: I have a 2001 Mazda Protege ES with a manual transmission. The owners manual states GL5 or GL4 as the correct transmission fluid. I have heard that you are not supposed to use a GL5 that has sulpheric additives in it. Is this correct? If so, why is there no footnote regarding this in the owners manual? MazdaUSA answer: "You've inquired about the recommended manual transaxle oil ... Read More
Didn't you say your dealer refused to give you a loaner car when you took it in for a warranty problem? I'm just asking, because I just found the following statement on MazdaUSA's web site: "Take your car in for warranty work at a participating Mazda dealership, and you can get a loaner car at no charge. Just ask. You won't have to arrange your day around a repair schedule, ask ... Read More
Here's a post that addresses the "death rattle". It's post 12999 from the Protege forum and was done by Protegefan. "Here is a post from another forum I thought would be handy for all to see: 2.0L Engine Noise This is what Mazda has to say about it, I think we should push them to come up with a fix faster, come on it has been a problem since the middle ...
