    For me the problem was that for whatever reason, the low beam filament in both of my headlight bulbs burnt out. I replaced the bulbs and it worked fine. It actually happened to me again during another wet day. It hasn't done it since, but take a look at your bulbs and look at the filaments. If replacing the bulbs doesn't work then I really don't know what to tell you. ... Read More

    I have a 98 mazda that had a squealing belt one time. I had the alternator in a speciality shop and the guy told me that the alternator is just barely the right size for the demands on it. So the belt has to be "banjo" tight or it will give problems. AFter it was tightened up then it didnt' give a problem anymore.

    o/d light blinking on and off and check engine light staying on ... did not help.any ideas? Did you get a diagnostic done? The codes may help narrow down the problem.

    Hello...I recently just bought a 2001 Mazda Protege ES and I am having problems with the fog lights. The fuse closest to the driver side of the car keeps blowing. I have gone through 6 (15A) fuses. I try turning on the fog lights and they just flicker and go off which usually means the fuse has gone. Any ideas? Or should I take to dealer?

    The high beam bulbs are also the low beam bulbs Interesting. I guess Mazda changed this in 2002 because my Protege has separate bulbs for high & low beam.

    My little yellow lights work and so do my high beams. The high beam bulbs are also the low beam bulbs. I checked the fuses and they are good. I took out the relay from under the hood in the fuse box and the high beams and low beams didn't work. It was a wet and rainy day so maybe I hit a puddle and got something wet? 2001 Mazda Protege ...     Take it to a local auto parts store and have them hook a scanner to it to retrieve the fault code number that's causing the engine light to come on. They will do this for free. Post the information here, or on one of the many Mazda Protege online forums. There are many enthusiasts for this car who are willing to help.

    Does she have any records showing any type of maintenance or service being performed on said vehicle? Mazda Protege' is a great vehicle (I'm still driving my 92 LX) that will last for a good while but you have to perform preventive maintenance on it to keep it working.

    Some Japanese cars (many Hondas in fact) have so-called "interference" engines where loss of the timing belt may cause considerable damage. Protege engines are of the "non-interference" type where loss of the timing belt will only cause the engine to come to a stop, with no damage.

    Yeah, the 98 Protege came with either the 1.5L Z5 engine or the 1.8L BP-DE as found also in the Miata. For 99, Mazda switched to the 1.8L FP-DE engine, which is essentially a destroked verion of the 2.0 FS-DE found in the same model year 626 and newer (2001+) Protege's.
