If you are a person whose passion is improving his driving skill set, this is a perfect tool. The MX5 will reward you with increasing satisfaction and fun as you learn to master driving skills. Routinely switch off traction control after engine start-up to obtain linear throttle response and to learn the car's traction characteristics. This car is quite capable even in stock form; resist the urge to modify its performance until you have fully utilized all it has to offer.
When you are not in the mood for spirited driving, you can chill and enjoy the scenery and the MX5 will not annoy you with a bad temper.
Some 2008s had a defect in the manual trans. Mazda fixed mine under warrantee. THX!
-mild oversteer, predictable drifting due to near 50/50 weight distribution
-engine likes high revs
-strong brakes with good feedback
-solid chassis integrity
-well designed soft top: easy to convert from the driver's seat in a few seconds. With the top down, the visibilty of surrounding traffic and road conditions far exceeds that of a car with a roof: better visual input= better decisions. I routinely drive top-down. Even in rain and snow the interior remains nearly dry when at 40mph+
-with top down you need a good heater and heated seats; the MX5 has these
-simplicity: In a sports car, less is more. Analog gauge set easy to read. HVAC controls simple. No computer interface
-Ford-designed manual trans could be smoother shifting to consume less of my concentration. Used Motorcraft XT-M5-QS GL4 75w-90 oil in the gear box and improved shifting by 75%
-removed 2008 center console cup holders and replaced with aftermarket cubby
-angled front of seat bottom upwards to increase thigh support using spacers
-replaced stock horn with Nautilus air horn
-I prefer window switches in doors instead of center console
And that's about it! Since I usually ride motorcycles, which are inherently more engaging than cars, I regard most cars just as a mode of transport, but not the MX5. The MX5 is a car that makes you live in the moment yet rewards you with lifetime satisfaction.
Noticed high (2.5 quarts in 3500 mi.). Spent 1000 more miles convincing the dealer that there REALLY was a problem. Dealer finally tested cylinders for leakdown and then changed the short block due to a scored cylinder wall due to an improperoy installed ring. During the repair, the front of the car was damaged and the transmission linkage was improperly reassembled. After the transmission linkage repair, the transmission still doesn't shift as well as it did when delivered.
Great convertible top design. Good low speed torque for small engine. Fun to drive. Switch in trunk that disables the electric opener for the trunk preventing use of the dash button thus protecting contenet when car is parked with the top down.
Educate dealer service personnel better. Do away with fake roll bars that restrict use of the topwell when traveling with the top up.
We have a 1993 Mazda which is fun to drive and has been dependable and mostly bulletproof for years. The refinement of the 2008, purchased new in 2009,is very impressive. The quick drop convertible top is just wonderful for changing moods and fun factors.
The BOSE sirius radio system is terrific...handles like a skateboard.
Excellent handling as it corners better than anything I have driven. Good acceleration, great mileage/design, and fun to drive! Insuring this sports car is an unexpected bargain! What more could you ask for?
The six speed manual transmission starts shifting very smooth after a couple thousand miles. Bose stereo is nice quality and the door speakers seem very robust. Ease of the drop top is nothing short of incredible. After a little practice...3 seconds down, and 5 seconds up...from the drivers seat.
I took my Grand Touring to a great seat shop in my area and they added two inches of hard foam to both seats as they were too low for me and provided no lower back support. They work great now! Had the same problem with a 2000 Ford F150 XLT! Seats should be designed to support the lower back!
I really wasn't planning to buy new, but with more than a $9,000 discount off sticker, how could I pass up a new Miata. Great car! I miss the go-cart feel and exhaust noise of the 93, but the ride is much more comfortable. Definitely leans more in corners. I'll be adding RX8 sway bars soon. Looking forward to many happy years in my new Miata.
Soft top is one of the best designs around. Easy to put up and down. Looks classy too.
Bose stereo really isn't that good. Aux jack would be nice. Lower ride height and bigger sway bars would be nice.
