2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible Touring 2dr Convertible (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

I've owned a Miata since 1992. The 2006 is the best ever with a few minor issues. I got the 6 speed automatic -- it works fine in both full and manual automatic but loses some performance to the manual transmission (no surprise). Fit and finish is perfect. AM radio reception is poor -- lots of static; haven't taken it in yet. Fun to drive and looks great. Driver seat is too low for me. Excellent on the highway with the top down and wind buffer in use. 25 mpg on first two tanks of mixed driving. Excellent dealer car knowledge and service.

Favorite Features

The ease of putting the top up and down is superb. I'll be top down more with the 2006 Miata. Trunk space is great.

Suggested Improvements

Add manual seat height adjuster to drivers side.

Review

My first Mazda and first MX-5 and I have never had more fun in a car. Bought in winter to be able to negotiate on price and now are just enjoying the top down driving that is a pure pleasure. I am 6'5 so fitting was a concern but it is pleasantly snug all around and makes you feel like you are part of the car. Handling and sensitivity is sensory and requires the lightest touch. Couldn't ask for a better more fun car.

Favorite Features

Extra space, easy roof, stereo, color combinations.

Suggested Improvements

Gear box a little sticky in 1st to 2nd while warming up, then smooth as butta.

Review

I have only had my car a few days but, I can sum it up in one word. WOW. This car is a real head turner.

Favorite Features

Convertible and spring time. What else is there?

Suggested Improvements

Electric seat on drivers side so seat can be raised for short people like me.

Review

So much fun to drive and one of the best cars with the top down. Great looks inside and out. Comfy seats and bigger than the previous Miatas. Race car steering, race car transmission and race car suspension. Suspension turns in sharp while the wheels stick like super glue. Flick the steering wheel and you dive into the apex with barely any turns on the wheel and the whole car talks to you. Great exhaust note. Great gas mileage. I owned a Evo 8 and currently own a 350Z and a Lotus Elise an this is probably the best deal when it comes to handling. And has become my new weekend car and ever daily driver.

Favorite Features

The exterior looks great! Interior is comfy, practical, comes with no nonsense (most of it anyways). Steering is quick and light, chassis talks to you and is very communicative. Top down driving couldn't get any better. Transmission is probably one of the best ever. a great deal.

Suggested Improvements

It's a 2 seater and has 4 cupholders. Gas door release is hidden in the storage area. Body roll sets in a little to early. Not as quick in the straights as a 350Z or a Boxster. Seats are hard to get used to but hold you in very well.

Review

Very questionable plastics in interior. Have experienced annoying rattling clicking noise on console. Absolutely no help from Mazda with problem. While very fun to drive, the annoying rattle takes enjoyment out.

Favorite Features

Looks, fun to drive.

Suggested Improvements

Get rid of cheap plastics in interior.

Review

What a dream to drive! First roadster ever and what a blast. When seated in the cockpit, I feel like a race car driver. Performance is surprisingly fast, it doesn't feel like it but look at the speedo and you're movin'. Very comfortable, great design, love the heated seats. Bose sound system is great, especially with the top down, though a CD stacker would appreciated. I can't drive this car enough!

Favorite Features

New design is fabulous and almost there. Roof is fast and easy. Brakes are huge and powerful, tranny is short and quick.

Suggested Improvements

Front end design could be stronger yet (in look, not build), clutch is hard to get comfy as the gas is too close and the clutch too far. Horn is very, very, very embarrassing. Bring a hat and sunglasses to hide behind before you use the horn.

Review

Have driven the sport model for 2 months now. Opted for the 6 speed automatic since I commute in traffic and I didn't want to go back to shifting. The automatic is great with the clutchless shifter and the steering wheel paddles. This car handles like a go kart and has very quick acceleration even with the automatic. Down shifts are easy either with the pedal or the shifter. Top works easily and stows neatly. Fit and finish are excellent. This car is really fun to drive on day trips but long hauls would not be for me. It really makes my commute fun instead of drudgery.

Favorite Features

6 speed automatic with manual (clutchless) shifter and steering wheel paddles. Ease of top down and up operation. Fit and finish. Exterior design with excellent driver position.

Suggested Improvements

Cup / bottle holders in door push into leg and can be uncomfortable. Turn signal shut off not always triggered by steering wheel due to short steering response required for a turn.

Review

Newly purchased true red sport model with suspension package. Just drove it up the Oregon coast top down, what a blast. Handles great, looks great, more fun than any vehicle I've ever driven!

Favorite Features

Top goes up or down in seconds, super good handling, beautiful red.

Suggested Improvements

A spare tire would be nice.

Review

This car is a blast to drive! The fit and quality of the exterior and interior are very good to excellent. The road noise at highway speed is acceptable, you can still have a conversation with your passenger. The car has plenty of power, you don't even need to down-shift when passing at highway speed. The short shift close ratio gear box is precise and easy to use. The cup holders in the center console are pretty useless as anything in them will impede shifting. Gas mileage has averaged about 25MPG but that is with a lot of city driving. And .. IT'S FUN TO DRIVE!

Favorite Features

The handling and quickness. Ease of raising and lowering the top. Gauge and control placement, and driving comfort.

Suggested Improvements

Get rid of the console cup holders, another storage area would be more useful. A supercharger option would make this car the baddest thing on the street under $40,000.00.

Review

This is a wonderful car. Traded my 2000 Special Edition in for it. I think they took my car and ten Japaneses engineers, locked them in a room and told them not to come out until they improved the car in every way. They did it. This one should last me ten years or more.

Favorite Features

The top design is great. The stereo is perfect for the car. 30 more horsepower is just what it needed,

Suggested Improvements

Still, a few more inches inside would not hurt.
