Used TMV from $8,125
Most Mazda owners I have spoken with are similarly happy with their purchase! Looks like I will be buying a 2nd Mazda (2006) to replace my 2001; found ONE after looking all summer. (That is -- found one with only 50K, rather than the typical 80K-120K.) I managed to bargain the 15,000 down but NOT anywhere close to Edmunds TMV. I continue to have and express on this forum concerns that ... Read More
I believe because of the ecomomy, the demand for new cars is down, making the demand for used cars up. That said, MPV's have never been a popular van, so persistence should pay off in trying to find one at a good price. We've owned our MPV since new in 2004, it's been a great van. Problems with the ignition coils, fan control module, and IAC valve, but I haven't read ... Read More
I am an MPV owner -- a reasonably happy one. My 2001 MPV LX ran well with few repairs...until this year. But now it is 10 years old, 103K on the odometer, and has had some predictable problems -- rust in the rear wheel wells, the usual rotted out rear heating hose, a few rust spots on the hood, etc. I bought it used in 2005, with 27K on the odometer, ... If an MPV bucks at idle, it is very likely due to a major vacuum leak in the PCV hose that attaches the back of the intake manifold under the cowl. The hose makes a right angle bend (down toward the ground) immediately after exiting the intake manifold. The hose is a common point of value in all 2000-2006 Mazdas but the OE hose in 2002-2003 MPVs was particularly prone to ... Read More
Thanks for the responses guys. I had thought that the First Generation Sienna had some type of issue with sludging and tranny issues. My dad had the 2002 Odyssey and Honda was gracious enough to fix his issues for free as they extended the warranty for him. But I should not look at anything earlier than 2003? With regards to two kids, I should have specified, I have two kids but ... Read More
2002 MPV original owner. I've had all the usual MPV problems. After all these years and problems I still like this van. It still has that certain style and plenty of ZOOM ZOOM. Well, maybe there are a few bad apples out there with the Honda emblem on them....but I know of a person who owns a 2003 and they love it and my sister has a 2004 Sienna and it is very solid after 160K miles on it. Maybe I should have only mentioned Toyotas are better in the long run. I know the Blue Book on both Hondas and Toyotas are stronger ... Read More
but it's had a terrible track record going back to 2002 That's not true. The MPV had a great track record up until late 2004 or 2005. It was one of Consumer Reports top recommended minivans, and reliability was listed as one of the best. The transmission "shift shock" issue hurt it's reliability rating, but that was a minor problem that was corrected with having the TCM reflashed. I've only heard ... Read More
Hello maypo1960. I read your Dec 31, 2006 posting about the heater problem in your Mazda MPV. I have a 1993 with the same problem - hot water going to and from the heater when I check under the hood, good fan strength, heat gauge is up but no hot air. Did you find out where your problem was ? Thank you
I have a 2006 MPV with 15,000 miles on it. Have a new issue it seems. Has anyone had an issue with the stock radio changing channels on its own? I've been posting for years here about my problems with the 2003 LX I have. First, creaking sound coming from the front end when going over things like speed bumps and temps below 30 degrees. AC vents are located between second and third rows on ceiling. Fan speed can be controlled from front seat, or back seat area, if driver chooses. Works dang well in my opinion.
How many rear AC vents are in the 2006 mpv, and were are they located for the second row seating? Also, how well do they work. Thank you very much.
As an owner of a 2006 Sienna LE, I would recommend the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SE...but it would have to have the separately controlled temperature for the driver and front passenger that was optional on the 2007 GC SE models. Our daughter's 1999 GC SE now has almost 106,000 miles with very few problems. My sister's 1986 Caravan SE had 170,000 trouble free miles when they sold it to a ... Read More
Although the Toyota is a good van, you're buying it right about the time that it will likely need its first major maintenance. At 117,000 km, it probably needs a new timing belt, tune up, and tires. My wife and I just purchased a 2006 MPV LX with 17,000 miles on it. It doesn't have any upgrades, just the regular LX-trim options. We couldn't find a used ES (2004 or newer) in our price range. Just bought a 2006 MPV this week. Bought it because i liked the way the transmmsion shifted. The toyota and honda brands drove me crazy. Any thoughts would be appreacited.

Just completed my 1st week of driving the 2003 MPV LX I bought from my Dad. So far, so good! Drove 335 miles on 1 tank of gas, so it's not that great on fuel (compared to my old Honda Civic) but it's not bad either. I estimated an average of 20mpg, and that's with it loaded with music equipment, and a combination of highway and city driving.
Hi all , So I'm about to buy a 2006 MPV LX Plus ... so how has the MPV been to you current owners? I currently have a 1990 Audi's ... so electrical problems I have experienced many times ... Thanks for you response! Will
okaasan, Those prices aren't too great, but I guess that is because they are the only dealer and supply is limited. Here's a tip - the MPV ES at dealer 1 can be had for $23850 through Carsdirect.com. That includes a $3500 rebate and another $1000 for financing through Mazda. Check it out.
Any advice on which of these you would choose for a family of five? Two big kids and one smaller one in a car seat. That's correct, thanks for the clarification. My slip on not remembering that. For that matter, our '02 really hasn't exhibited the shift jolt either and hasn't had a reflash. YMMV. I did get the tranny fluid changed at 30k though. -Brian
I don't believe all 2004's had the transmission issue requiring reflash. Just the one's with Janurary - March manufacture dates. My 2004 has an April manufacture date, and hasn't had any problems(knock on wood).
2002-2004 MPV's had an issue with the transmisssion programming which gave some jolty shifts. A reflash came out that seems to address it. IIRC, the '05 and '06 aren't affected by it as they've changed software and some internals. Programming of electronic transmissions has affected other makes as well. -Brian
I am considering buying a 2006 Mazda MPV. Consumer Reports states the transmission has a lot of problems. Can any 2006 owner advise me what their experience is with this vehicle? Thanks!

Agree with that Hans. The 2006 CR Buying Guide was very confusing in reguards to vehicles recommended and reliability. They seemed to contradict their findings throughout. The 2004 Honda Odyssey(pg 204) and the 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan V-6(pg200)have EXACTLY the same reliabilty scores in the 14 categories rated. Yet, the Ody gets a better than average reliability score and the DGC gets only an average overall reliability score.

Meanwhile, T&C and Caravan have Average reliability for 2003 and 2004 but CR on page 182 CR predicts the 2006 MPV as a recommended choice and does not recommend the 2006 T&C and GC. essentially the same as the 2003. Just some exterior and interior design modifications and a few minor mechanical modifications like adding rear-disc brakes.
