I was cleaning the IAC valve this morning for my engine stalling problem on Mazda MPV 2005. I accidently dropped a Lug and am unable to locate it with a flah light , nor does a magnetic pickup tool is able to pick any thing. If I drive this vehicle without finding the Lug will it cause any damage to the car or create any safty issues ? any ideas , ... Read More
I have a 2005 MPV with 66,000 miles; original owner in excellent condition. Our family has expanded and unfortunately I need a larger van. So, I'm actually selling my beloved MPV. It's silver, has power sliding doors and a roof rack -- I think that covers the "extras". We're asking $8,000. If anyone is interested, please contact me at maxwellsmommy@gmail.com. Located in Virginia.
I was using an average, and also some specific examples I cited -- that 2005 Toyota Sienna I saw listed at $18K, but the Edmunds.com TMV on that vehicle was $11,040. Obviously it is a range and different for each car. I imagine a tiny subcompact Chevy Aveo is not marked up as much as a cool Toyota SUV or Prius. I'd say the $4000 is probably about right for the ... Read More
Most Mazda owners I have spoken with are similarly happy with their purchase! Looks like I will be buying a 2nd Mazda (2006) to replace my 2001; found ONE after looking all summer. (That is -- found one with only 50K, rather than the typical 80K-120K.) I managed to bargain the 15,000 down but NOT anywhere close to Edmunds TMV. I continue to have and express on this forum concerns that ... Read More
I am an MPV owner -- a reasonably happy one. My 2001 MPV LX ran well with few repairs...until this year. But now it is 10 years old, 103K on the odometer, and has had some predictable problems -- rust in the rear wheel wells, the usual rotted out rear heating hose, a few rust spots on the hood, etc. I bought it used in 2005, with 27K on the odometer, ... Thanks for the responses guys. I had thought that the First Generation Sienna had some type of issue with sludging and tranny issues. My dad had the 2002 Odyssey and Honda was gracious enough to fix his issues for free as they extended the warranty for him. But I should not look at anything earlier than 2003? With regards to two kids, I should have specified, I have two kids but ... Read More
2002 MPV original owner. I've had all the usual MPV problems. After all these years and problems I still like this van. It still has that certain style and plenty of ZOOM ZOOM. Here is my ownership experience. 2002 LX, rear air, roof rack, 6 disc cd, motorized driver seat, sage green exterior, tan interior, 16" alloy wheels, tinted glass, 4 speed auto w/overdrive. 3 year, 50,000 mile bumper to bumper ... I too have a 2005 Mazda MPV, with low miles, around 37k. I have it in the shop today, as there appears to be an odd transmission slip. Seems that when shifting around the speed of 40, the van sometimes does not want to shift up in gear. More gas just displays a higher RPM range on the tachometer but does not produce any higher speeds. It seems to want to ... Read More
I bought my automatic 2005 Mazda MPV new and have put over 50,000 miles on it. For about 1.5 to 2 year it has been slipping at times when it goes from 2nd to 3rd gear. My Mazda is idleing very high when started. RPM is up to 1.5 and will not idle down at all. Did anyone have this proble before?
The back three can be tricky? With the back 3 coils (#'s 1-3) you have to take off the intake manifold to get to them... takes about an hour and a half I believe.
There are step by step directions, with photos, on how to replace the back coils at the "MPVClub.com". A lot of people at the site say it is fairly easy.
Thanks alot. you saved me from being reap off.. I would greatly appreciated if someone can show me the easiest way to remove and replace those coil at the firewall area. Thanks
Thanks for your info. Now I'm thinking that this mechanic is just trying to reap me off. I tried to ask him for my old parts and he mentioned that he misplace them. I'm sure that he only replace cylinders in the front.. The back three can be tricky? what does that mean? im taking my car to another mechanic to take a look at it, or do it myself to ... Read More
he then told me two days later that I have to replace all the coil. It would be a miracle for all 6 coils to fail at the same time. No, your mechanic is not guessing. He is incompetent. Take your MPV somewhere else. If he did replace #2 coil, he should have asked you if you wanted #1 and #3 replaced since they are in the back of engine as ... Read More
You can buy a 6 pack of MPV coils on ebay for between $120-185 shipped and you should shop around with differnt mechanics to see how much they charge for the labor, I know the back 3 can be tricky, you could also doing it yourself there is a great article on replacing them on the Mazda MPV forum.
Mechanic has just replaced all the sparkplug and no. 2 coil. he mentioned that the tester is indicating that no2 coil is defective, so he replaced it, however the problem is still there, he then told me two days later that I have to replace all the coil. I felt that this mechanic is guessing but I don't want to tell him directly... so I need any advise or assistance otherwise ... Read More
but it's had a terrible track record going back to 2002 That's not true. The MPV had a great track record up until late 2004 or 2005. It was one of Consumer Reports top recommended minivans, and reliability was listed as one of the best. The transmission "shift shock" issue hurt it's reliability rating, but that was a minor problem that was corrected with having the TCM reflashed. I've only heard ... Read More

As an owner of a 2006 Sienna LE, I would recommend the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SE...but it would have to have the separately controlled temperature for the driver and front passenger that was optional on the 2007 GC SE models. Although the Toyota is a good van, you're buying it right about the time that it will likely need its first major maintenance. At 117,000 km, it probably needs a new timing belt, tune up, and tires. If the vehicle has had the timing belt done and the tires are in good shape, then the Toyota is a good way to go. If you choose the Chrysler, see if it qualifies ... Read More
I would go with a Toyota if I were you (of course I do own a Sienna!). If I'm not mistaken, even a 2005 should have stow-n-go, so you're covered there. I've always heard that Toyotas last forever. I never got the chance to find out with my 1GR Sienna, as it was stolen about 1/2 way through my lease! I'm planning on keeping this one a good, long while.......
Thank you for your comments. New Chrysler costs about 5K more than the 1 year old model. Our budget was ~ 15k$, hence I was considering Sienna.
High miles shouldn't be much of concern on a Toyota and (if you can knock the price down a bit) it would be my choice here. I know prices in Canada are higher than the States, but if you're interested in a Chrysler, can't you buy a new one for about that much or a little more?
Another newbie to the vans forum from Ontario, Canada. Looking to buy a used minivan, 2007 Dodge grandcaravan (19k, 19000 km) vs 2005 Sienna LE (15.5k, 117000 km) vs 2003 Mazda MPV DX (11k, 100000km). Life expectancy is critical for me considering I would like to keep the van for seven to eight years. All vans are in good condition and recently fully serviced. Any suggestions? Thanks, Sridhar.
This is my first post (from Ontario, Canada), hence please bear with me. I am looking to buy a used minivan, details are as follows: 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SE (Stow 'N Go), 19,000 km, $19,000 2005 Toyota Sienna LE, 117,000 km, $15,500 2003 Mazda MPV DX, 100,000 km, $11,000 Each van is in very good condition, all from dealers, Car Proof says no accidents, claims etc. Each has their merits ... I had my 2002 MPV tranny done for $3,500. Mazda wanted $3,500 to pop in a new "remanufactured" unit. They supposedly installed the upgraded pump that came out in 2004 or 2005. They were shocked at the cost themselves. They ... Read More

Personally, given the choice between the year old Town and Country and the 2004 Odyssey, I would probably go with the Odyssey, mainly because it is Certified, and the 2004s did not have the transmission and other problems that earlier years had. My first choice would be a NEW Caravan SXT with the HUGE discounts BUT since you have a Mazda and have been pleased with it, the NEW 2005 MPV would probably be YOUR best choice. The Odyssey might drive the most like a sports car but it is not as quiet as the T&C, GC, or Sienna.

Can anyone confirm this? I know that Mazda is partly owned by Ford but ... Read More
The new car show opened in Louisville today. I promised Hansienna a review/comparison of the top minivans....so here it is Hans (the rest of ya can read it too) Well, first off...let's talk about atmosphere.Breathtaking....ahh...new cars under one humongous roof as far as the eye could see. I quickly learned not to walk to close to the vendors, who were looking to catch your eye to sell you anything from gutter ... Read More
Interesting that the UK survey was co-sponsored by Warranty Direct -- 30,000 cars worth of data ain't bad. The U.S. arm of Warranty Direct seems to get regularly slammed on the Edmunds extended warranties forum primarily because they are not affiliated with the auto manufacturer. Mazda's EasyCare extended warranty service contract that our dealer offered was outrageously expensive for so-so coverage, but EasyCare is owned by Ford. I'm considering a Warranty ... Read More

Mazda is continuing the $3,000 dealer incentive at least through April. I think their reasoning is "We are spending about 3 cents on marketing, so lets take the money saved and pass it on as a dealer incentive." Spotty effectiveness. Not much buzz to get people in the showroom to begin with, particularly when they are up against the cachet/modernity of the Honda and Toyota, and the aggressive pricing of the ... Read More
"I'm just posting facts" Seems you are posting the "facts" only when it is convienent for you to do so.You have several posts(CT&C,D.G.C post #511 and Minivan shopping post #415) which you speak of Consumer Report being biased. And now you are quoting from C.R as if it were gospel. If Consumer Reports is biased as you say...why are you quoting them??? Knowing the facts goes a long way in determining ... Read More
Just traded in my 2000 MPV ES on a 2005 Honda Pilot. Had a major problem with the battery going dead in the van since last summer. After 2 new batteries and an alternator, they finally figured out there was water in the right front door lock assembly creating a slow drain on the battery. They had the van for two weeks and the cost to "rip out" the door panel ... Read More
It depends on what you want and are looking for in a minivan...as well as how much you are wanting to spend. The MPV will save you close to 6 thousand over a similarlly equipped Ody.You can easily get the MPV at invoice minus rebate. You want a bigger van with more elbow room, better resale if not keeping it long....go Ody. Ody has stability control...which really shouldn't come into play ... Read More
Read and study data that Edmunds provides FREE of charge on the internet. Read what actual owners write about their minivans here in Town Hall. Why did CR pay MSRP for their 2005 Grand Caravan SXT that has too many options most people do not want? I can understand paying MSRP for an Odyssey EX or a Sienna XLE even though many Honda and Toyota dealers sell them with a nice ... Read More
Thats right bluedevils. You never know when you'll stumble across a great all you can eat buffet and need that extra 0.5" of hip and shoulder room. Recieved the 2005 Cars issue from Consumer Reports the other day. Just a few interesting facts I thought I would share with my fellow minivan shopper forum members. Best Minivan was the Honda Ody(yeah...one point for mac) Best Minivan under $25,000 was the Dodge Grand ... Read More
It certainly is that. We had a 2002 MPV ES and loved the car-like handling! We now have 2005 Ody Touring and it's noticeably heftier.
Assuming 2005 models, it all depends on whether you go with the Mazda financing (take off $1,000) and get the dealer incentive ($3,000 off). Other option is 0% financing, but if you run the numbers it isn't as good a deal as $3,000 off. These aside, your MPVs have about $1,900 - ~$2,500 invoice->MSRP mark-up. Use Edmunds invoice prices to negotiate from invoice -- perhaps a hundred or two over invoice ... Read More
The only 2002 minivans that had fold into the floor were the Mazda MPV and the Honda Odyssey and neither had the split 3rd row. I think some 2002 Chevy Venture had a 2-3-2, 2,2,3 or 2-3-3 layout but NOT the nice fold into the floor 3rd row of the MPV or Odyssey which doubled the cargo space behind 3rd row when all seats were in the upright position. The Chrysler ... Read More
Instead of 0% financing, there is a $3,000 dealer incentive for MPVs until 2/28/05. Edmunds shows this, but other sites and even some Mazda salespeople aren't very aware. Couple that with a $1,000 incentive to finance with Mazda (can always refinance with another lender). Then work with a dealer that will sell at or close to invoice, and that takes off another $1,900 (goal) for even a base LX. For a ... Read More
C.R came out with their yearly rankings of minivans. Got the March issue today. The Mazda MPV wasn't tested, but it ranked 4th out of 8 listed. I use to think they knew what they were doing...now I'm not to sure. They have the MPV listed as "poor"reliability in todays issue( in paragraph above rating says MPV reliability has been "subpar")Thats in the same category as the 2004 Nissan Quest.I've read the Quest ... I, too, just recently went shopping for a minivan--our first. I really agree with most all of what veritasusa found. 1) The Toyota, in addition to being really proud of its vehicles, pricewise, really did have the most confusing options packaging I have ever seen (surpassed only, and barely at that, by the BCS rating system for college bowl games). 2) With Honda, if you want leather, you have ... That link was only for sales volume Hans...sales volume. Yes...your wonderful Chrysler Inc. is leading in total sales...everybody knows that as you mention it in just about every one of your posts. But, percentage increase in sales from previous years is stagnant on the Chrysler line.As well as most other lines for most of 2004.(The Edmunds link I read from reported Mazda MPV sales have increased this year) Chrysler sales are ... I am a little confused. According to the Edmunds 2005 MPV review, these come standard with rear A/C since 2004 (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2005/mazda/mpv/100466954/review.html?- tid=edmunds.n.standard.leftsidenav..15.Mazda*) On the other hand, when I look at optional equipment for the 2005, the 1LX/LX Plus package includes, among other things, rear air. This is not the case for the 2004, where the LX package also costs about 50% less than on the 2005 (about 1k vs. 1.5k.) I ... Read More
