    There was also a recall on that module. I had to have the one in my '03 replaced; check with your dealership to see if your vehicle fell under the recall. Issue was that the fan would either Not run ever causing serious overheating issues OR would run constantly even after the car was turned off thereby running down your battery.

    There are many "do it yourself" posts at MPVclub.com. How to replace the coils has a pretty cool step by step instructional complete with photos... it is under the "Problems" forum. There is also more info on how to replace a PCV hose.

    The 2004 MPV doesn't have coil packs. They have individual coils for each spark plug. The #5 is in the front and should have been very easy to replace... 5 minutes. The 1-3 coils are on the back of engine and require an hour and a half of labor. The coils are problematic, and as such I wouldhave your friend ask Mazda replacement under "goodwill".     My wife really likes our 2004 MPV LX with around 68k miles. We would also look into buying a new one if they were still available. They really are a one of a kind minivan. Excellent quality. I think if Mazda brought it back, currently being sold in Japan, with better mpg, it would be a sales winner.

    I don't know about getting roll-down windows installed, but if I remember correctly, the 2000-current Mazda MPV has power windows in the second rows, as does the 2004 Sienna (the Toyota will be a good deal more expensive than the Mazda). Maybe the MPV would work for you? A 2001 MPV LX (mid-level trim), with 70,000 miles, and in good condition, should be between $7,000 and $8,000.

    I don't believe all 2004's had the transmission issue requiring reflash. Just the one's with Janurary - March manufacture dates. My 2004 has an April manufacture date, and hasn't had any problems(knock on wood).

    2002-2004 MPV's had an issue with the transmisssion programming which gave some jolty shifts. A reflash came out that seems to address it. IIRC, the '05 and '06 aren't affected by it as they've changed software and some internals. Programming of electronic transmissions has affected other makes as well. -Brian

    Legitimate concerns, but $15,000 will put you in a very nice 2004 or 2005 MPV. If you get a 2004 make sure the built on date is after March...that is when Mazda corrected the transmission computer glitch problem. Which is the primary reason the MPV has fallen in reliability.     Agree with that Hans. The 2006 CR Buying Guide was very confusing in reguards to vehicles recommended and reliability. They seemed to contradict their findings throughout. The 2004 Honda Odyssey(pg 204) and the 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan V-6(pg200)have EXACTLY the same reliabilty scores in the 14 categories rated. Yet, the Ody gets a better than average reliability score and the DGC gets only an average overall reliability score.

    We have a 2004 Mazda MPV. I am the primary driver...but technically it is the wifes van. ;) We replaced a Buick Century Wagon with the MPV. Agree that convenience, comfort and utility is hard to beat in a minivan...especially with a growing family. Good luck and congrats on your Ody.

    The 2004 Consumer Reports minivan comparison review had the Ody at 147 ft in braking distance from 60mph.This was behind the Mazda MPV-135, the Kia Sedona 143, the Dodge Grand Caravan 144 ft.     In the "Real World," my 2004 MPV got 24mpg in mostly hwy driving(say 75%hwy) calculated over 2 tanks of gas. Feel like it is getting close to what EPA indicates. Satisfied. :P

    The 2004 MPV has the "Triple H" steel structural reinforcements for extra strength and impact protection-per Mazda.I don't know if it was new for that model year though.

    My 04 MPV tranny problem was fixed in 1st try. It has to be 2 part procedure, reflash the TCM, then reflash the PCM. Maybe it is not good enough without the PCM reflash. Sometimes the TCM unit has hardware failure also, worst to the worst Mazda will change the TCM hardware b4 doing the reflash things.
