If an MPV bucks at idle, it is very likely due to a major vacuum leak in the PCV hose that attaches the back of the intake manifold under the cowl. The hose makes a right angle bend (down toward the ground) immediately after exiting the intake manifold. The hose is a common point of value in all 2000-2006 Mazdas but the OE hose in 2002-2003 MPVs was particularly prone to ... Read More

We have a Mazda MPV 2000 with about 113,000 miles. For the past couple of years, we hear clicking noise from the front end. We have had the brakes, shocks and struts replaced but the noise keeps coming back. We live in the Chicago area, and during the winter, it seems that the noise was gone - we were relieved. Yesterday, as the weather is warming up, we started to hear ... Read More

My 2000 MPV is experiencing intermittent starting problems and I suspect that the immobilizer circuit is immediately cutting the ignition once the car starts or is not letting the van start at all. The dash light will either fail to come on for the self-test prior to start, or will come on and stay on; either case will not allow the van to run. Most of the time it runs fine, ... Read More
One more thing; the rust. My MPV showed signs of rust on the passenger lower lip within the first 24 months! Mazda did cover it with a lot of groaning at that time. They said that I would be on my own thereafter. Now, I may be picky, but rust on today's cars is becoming a very seldom thing. To have a virtually new car have the rust issues around those ... I have a 2002 MAzda MPV that initially got 20mpg and gradually increased to 23mpg over 80,000. In May while away from home the transmission went kaput and would not stay in gear. My 2000 MPV LX has 95,000 miles. It has major engine problems. For the last several years (3 to 8) it had a very subtle occasional cylinder miss. I own a 2000 Mazda MPV with 57,000K on it, recently my check engine light came on so I connected the OBD || tester and got an P0031 DTC, Result; H02S Heater Control Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor 1. I have posted this question elsewhere, but now that I found this thread, I might as well re-post it here. I'm on the verge of becoming a "van-Dad", albeit unwillingly, and I have been fielding different views on which van to get. Well said dm126. I also have a 2000 MPV and can't wait to get rid of it. I've had almost all the same problems as you and the thing only has little over 100K Kms which were made up mostly of trips to the grocery store and one trip to Nova Scotia (3,200 kms round trip). Just traded in my 2000 MPV.(LX in Sapphire Blue Mica w/188,000 miles) Thought I'd summarize my 8 years with this vehicle. First, the good: The "right size" vehicle for my family. Yeah if you want a warranty the Manufacturers warranty is generally the best way to go. I've heard of aftermarket warranties by GEICO and AAA but I would read the fine print and keep my investment to $200-300. That made no sense to me though because aren't these things made for such a function? Yes and No. Power ports on cars originally were cigarette lighters. I have seen some pretty crappy plugs on ... Read More
Thanks! It was a fuse! I didn't look under the dash or anything like that. I'm not very handy when it comes to cars. I did ask the service guy at the dealer though. Well it certainly sounds like a blown fuse, but you need to figure out what caused the fuse to blow. Start by disconnecting everything that isn't standard on the vehicle and look under the dash for wiring that looks like it's been repaired or tampered with. Oh yeah, stock up on fuses.
I purchased this car from a Mazda dealer on 1/27/07. I fell in love immediately. Before buying it I read the carfax report which noted that thecar had had electrical work done on it in the past. The only thing that I know of is the 2000 and newer Mazda MPV, which might be available at a price similar to the Town and Country.
I don't know about getting roll-down windows installed, but if I remember correctly, the 2000-current Mazda MPV has power windows in the second rows, as does the 2004 Sienna (the Toyota will be a good deal more expensive than the Mazda). Maybe the MPV would work for you? A 2001 MPV LX (mid-level trim), with 70,000 miles, and in good condition, should be between $7,000 and $8,000.
Any advice on which of these you would choose for a family of five? Two big kids and one smaller one in a car seat. The thing about Hyundai (and Kia) to keep in mind is that they have made huge strides in just the past few years. As for people who trash their cars in a year, yes, I've seen ... Read More
The OEM rotors seem to wear out faster/at the same rate as the pads. However, I did find out that aftermarket good quality rotors only cost about $40 each. One thing, be careful to torque wheels to correct spec otherwise you can warp the rotors. Interesting story: at the last service for my wife's 2000 LX (55K miles), I asked the dealer to check the brakes as the pedal was a ... Read More
Wretched Ford Contour engine! Read this if you have one of the original engines. I hope I am one of a few unlucky ones. I have one of the first 2000 MPVs, bought it in September, 1999. It is a 20th anniversary Mazda Miata blue ES. The check engine light has always gone on and off a lot. I had it checked out several times but gave up when they never ... Read More

For four years now I've been an extremely happy owner of a 2000 MPV, and have always been talking it up to anyone who'll listen. Now, for the past few weeks, all I see on this forum is complaints about unresolved transmission and power door problems in the newer 2002/2003's. Aren't you listening, Mazda/Ford? You are going to kill the golden goose that apparently the 2000/2001 models provided. From what I've ... Read More
I'm with you. Like you, I'm even willing to give them the benefit of the doubt (*warily* though) regarding tranny damage, but only because I personally haven't experienced it (no offense intended to those who have, but I have to go on what I personally know about the issue, ultimately). Unfortunately, the descriptions here and elsewhere raise a plausibility problem with Mazda's claim. The official statements we've seen to date are ... Read More
You're right, of course, you can only look at the data from the previous model year, and that's always the case. However, since the van is basically unchanged from the 2002 model, you can get *some* sense of your risk from looking at prior model years (and that's as good as you're going to do). Unfortunately, the last time I looked, they didn't have enough data on the '02's or '03's ... Read More
Just drove from NY to DC and averaged 19.1 MPG. Highway driving, 4 adults, child and luggage. Did not use AC, used regular unleaded and averaged 70 MPH. Average 16 MPG on typical country roads. Note... Van lacks passing power and am considering 04 Sienna but am aprehensive of 91 octane recomendation. Would appreciate any comments from 04 Sienna drivers using only regular unleaded.
#2133 of 6943 Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid by mainsail2 Sep 01, 2001 (3:12 pm) If any of you have noticed "sluggish" shifting the first several minutes of your drive, I'm happy to report that the Mobile 1 synthetic appears to be helping. I had it installed using the "flush" system (took 14-15 quarts), at K-Mart/Penske for $125.00 (including tax), which I thought was a pretty good deal. I had ... Read More
I bought the mpv in 9/29 with Mazda's $2000 rebate, I would have wait till Oct if I knew Mazda rebate in Oct is $500 more. See my point?
Okay, while on the subject of cheaping out on engines, Mazda pulled a good one with the 2000/01 models of the MPV when they put in a very small 2.5 liter Duratec with its 160 hp,which they got from Fords 'overstock' room. Although the engine has been reliable, the underpowered engine cost them much in sales volume as consumers went for the competitions larger engines. It also caused lower resale figures ... Read More
If you're planning on being within 200# of the MPV's weight limit, you won't have much left for cargo and passengers inside the van. If you run the numbers (check the owner's manual), you'll see that the 3000# limit only leaves about #250 for cargo and passengers before you hit the "gross combined weight" limit. This limit is the maximum weight of the van, trailer and cargo taken together. So while ... Read More
Hi all- Haven't posted in a long time -- like soon after we purchased our 2000 MPV in 2001! Still in love with my "Mama-mobile"! Would get another one in a heartbeat! We are experiencing the "sticky throttle" issue now with our 2000 MPV. I cruised through the archives, and see other MPV owners have experienced the same issue. When I called the dealer today, the service manager indicated "Mazda is ... Read More
I just traded my 2000 BMW 328i on a Silver MPV LX with rear air, pwr doors, and roof rack. Crazy? No just with a new child and a need to cut expenses. Basically after much looking around I figured that the MPV represented the best current value in V6 5-speed transportation. I really love the solid feel of the vehicle and I was impressed by the level of features/comfort for ... Read More
We have a trunk mounted hitch for our toyota and we're going to use that for now. The mfg gave us the settings we have to use to get it to fit the Mazda. We haven't had any problems with scratching on the Toyota..I hope it's the same for the van. If it doesn't work well for us, we'll get the hitch. When I was calling hitch places, I was told ... We have a 2000 Mazda MPV. We absolutely LOVE it! We've not had any trouble with it - until now. Our check engine light came on. We found out it was a problem with our transmission. It's in the process of being repaired right now. We only have 81,000+ miles on it. We drive it a lot - but never roughly. Has anyone else had any trouble with the transmission?
Recent 280 mile round trip to get the oldest daughter at camp, speeds of around 85+ on the freeway, and a bit of a thunderstorm for 30 minutes, not to mention cross winds the entire trip. Fuel economy: 19.6 on regular unleaded. This van is normally used on under 10 mile trips, so the lifetime average is 16.8MPG over 35,428 miles as of yesterday morning. TB
