Problems from day 1. Less than 5000k, bad alarm module. By 18k front brakes and rotors rusted through. By 21k, bad speed sensor, disabling ABS. Just hit 23k, waiting for next problem.

Fast, fun and reliable. 2 years; no problems and rare. Not like a Civic, you will not see your car every day. Highly customizable and quite a ride. I love this car.

I really dig this car. I had a Protege5 before it, and this was just the jump I was looking for. And the prices I paid was unbeatable at the time ($13.5k). There are know problems with this car, but if you do your research, they're easily fixed under warranty.

This car cannot be beaten for its price. Looks great, stands out. This is a economy racer if there ever was one. I paid under $17k brand new and I'm getting every dimes worth out of it.

Excellent car for the money. Outstanding grip and packed with features. Made for the curves and packs some boost. Responds well to modifications, i.e. intercooler upgrades, boost controller, exhaust, etc. I would buy this car again. No regrets.

Combine some minor engine performance mods with excellent suspension tuning using the best compact car platform made and you get a reliable, sporty car that is a blast to take on weekend trips through the hill country while not punishing you during your daily commute. There is a great online community at msprotege.com.

Overall, this is one of the best cars you could possibly acquire for the money. I have never had a more fun car to drive. The grip is relentless, and the steering is untouchable.

Fun Car to drive on the back roads
By Titanium on 08/16/04 00:00 AM (PDT)

Vehicle

2003 Mazda Mazdaspeed Protege New 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

Review

This car is great for running around on some back roads and everyday driving. The suspension will make the leakest driver a good driver. There are only a few things that should have never made it into production. The intercooler seems to be a little to small and with the plastic ic piping, heat soak becomes a problem. This will be felt on everyday driving and even more so when the car is pushed. The pcm has its bugs also and the reflash only helps a little bit.The all Kenwood stereo system is great for the person that likes clear music and doesnt need to share it with others. With just a little more power this car would be complete.
