2006 Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 Grand Touring 4dr Sport Sedan AWD (2.3L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

Review

This is a great alternative to the Evo and Sti on paper. However with the lack of drivetrain/engine testing by mazda, virtually no aftermarket parts available, terrible resale value, and awful customer service, this car was truly a bust. The clutch is hard to drive with it's abnormally high engagement point, though there was a recent techinacal service bulletin to fix it.

Best Features

When it works, it's a great sedan, fun to drive, comfortable ride yet firm and sporty, fast around town with the quick spooling turbo.

Worst Features

Reliability and customer service need serious help. With only 8k miles on it the car would hardly run in the cold. The engine would die under load until it had run for 10+ mins. So it went to the dealer numerous times totaling more than 30 days. Did mazda even do any engine testing under 32 degrees?

2006 Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 Sport 4dr Sport Sedan AWD (2.3L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

Review

This car is one of the few cars that really feels like it gets lighter and more agile the harder you drive it. Under normal driving circumstances, it seems heavy and sluggish, almost annoyingly so. When you push it, it just keeps getting better. Overall, a very enjoyable car and definitely a steal if you can get some discounts/rebates, as I did. My previous car was an RX-8 and this car pales in comparison, but the car before that was a WRX and this car is much more enjoyable. The AWD works great in the snow with a decent set of all seasons on it. Don't waste your time trying to negotiate snowy roads on the summer tires. Plenty of room for my growing family.

Best Features

Loads of usable power. Handles very well when pushed. Comfortable on trips. Pretty nice looking at most angles. Black Cherry Mica Paint is MILES deep, the metallic/mica in this paint is incredible for a factory paint job.

Worst Features

Phony tailpipes must go. A few simple, cost effective mods go a long way toward cleaning up the power delivery and let this car stretch it's legs closer to redline (Mazda should have done some of them). I wish the steering and clutch were a little lighter in everyday driving.

2006 Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 Sport 4dr Sport Sedan AWD (2.3L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

Review

The handling of this car is remarkable. You won't find better without buying a much higher priced, German sedan. The ride can be a bit stiff and as many have mentioned. The clutch certainly takes some getting used to but overall, buyers willing to spend an extra 3k on this particular drive-train probably expect it. I've had my Speed 6 for six months now and all I can say is, wow! It is everything I hoped it would be. A reliable and reasonably economical commuter capable of raising hell on weekends (Tail of the Dragon & no tickets, yeah!). If you want a grown up car that outperforms most V8 coupes without the hefty price and bad mileage, this is your car.

Best Features

That feeling you get when you stomp the gas at 80 MPH in 6th gear and realize just how much faster this car wants to go. Entering a turn marked for 35 MPH at 50, and exiting at 70.

Worst Features

1200 bucks to replace the stock tires after 10k miles?! I guess this one of the reasons it handles so well, but it's also a hidden cost many not be aware of. Once mastered, shifting the MS6 can be exhilarating, but learning this clutch can be frustrating. Mazda could tone down shifting a bit.

2006 Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 Grand Touring 4dr Sport Sedan AWD (2.3L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

Review

As a car enthusiast, I wanted a performance car with adult looks. The Speed6 delivers without the ticket-me-now air scoop and teenage styling cues found on the Mitsu Evo and Subaru WRX. The Speed6 is understated style, with great looks and awesome handling. Assembled in Japan, build quality is excellent. The Speed6 is even-tempered, providing ample feedback as you approach the limits. Turbo lag is noticeable but predictable. One minor complaint is that the RWD kicks in roughly in certain gears. For family outings, it has solid road feel with ample space for my wife and daughter. I bought my 2006 in February 2007. Pick one up while you can.

Best Features

The 6 speed manual transmission and AWD are terrific. The Bose stereo sounds great for a factory radio, the bi-level dash with info display closer to windshield level combined with on-wheel controls is great for distraction-free driving. Xenon headlights height adjustable and bright.

Worst Features

Heated seats are on/off only, and should be adjustable. There should be a bracket on the fuel door to hold the gas cap during refueling. I would have liked a more comprehensive on-board computer with fuel mileage, running time, etc.

Review

The car handles amazing and the price is great for what you're getting. The Bose stereo is pretty good. Amazing power... you would never think that this is a 4. More power than most 6 cyls. The paint quality on my Speed6 is suspect. Ice slid off my car during the winter, leaving several scratches on the trunk. Now that's cheap paint. Also, although the foldaway design of nav is excellent, it is not intuitive at all, much better in Honda and Nissan. Can't use nav when driving even though remote was made for passenger to use. The car drinks gas but its to be expected with this much power.

Best Features

AWD, HID, 18" wheels, subdued styling, Bose, foldaway nav, unbelievable handling.

Worst Features

Add trip computer, auto headlights, 2 settings for heated seats, better and more durable paint, all season tires to go with AWD!
