No accessories are required in the interior, as there's all the style and all the function necessary. Ten-spoke 18-inch wheels wrapped in 215/45R18 rubber are standard on the Mazdaspeed 3. The Mazdaspeed 3 already has the right credentials for speed on the street, but Mazdaspeed accessories get it ready for the track. Mazdaspeed 3's standard seats deliver a good compromise between track-ready support and highway comfort. Mandrel-bend cold-air intake helps the engine's oxygen intake. The Mazdaspeed 3's sound system lights up in various interesting ways. It doesn't sound bad either. Coil-over suspension and wide Toyo Proxes RA1 tires on forged aluminum wheels give the Mazdaspeed 3 a wide, tough stance. The car has buckets of power, great handling, superb brakes, a tight six-speed gearbox with tasty short throws, good ride and comfort levels, and for a front-wheel-drive hatchback, accelerates and corners better than anything in its class. By installing a new dash panel and raising the hood, engineers were able to stuff the Mazdaspeed 6's 2.3-liter turbo four into the Mazdaspeed 3. The Mazdaspeed 3's gauges are all burrowed into the dashboard. It's attractive, but less efficient for the driver's eye to take in at a single glance. The Mazdaspeed 3's transmission delivers low-effort action and positive engagement, but shorter throws would be better for track work. The interior is all black with the expected contrasting red stitching. Seat bolstering is more aggressive. Mazdaspeed products are known for their sharp handling and the 3 is no different. It takes the standard car's already high limits a step further with more grip and better balance. By virtue of being similarly sized five-doors, it's no surprise the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mazdaspeed 3 have similar silhouettes. But it's the Mazda that's more handsomely detailed. Even that big hood scoop can't keep the Subie from being a bore. With aluminum pedals, red trim on the seats and a more elegantly sculpted dash, the Mazdaspeed 3's interior actually looks sporty. Inside, the car is quiet and comfortable thanks to contoured sport seats with just-right cushioning. Don't let the Mazdaspeed 3's 6,750-rpm redline fool you, because the punchy power band peaks at 6,000 rpm. The Mazdaspeed 3 gets a six-speed manual transmission while the WRX has to make do with five manually shifted gears. However, only the WRX is available as an automatic. The MPS's 18-inch, 10-spoke wheels play into the car's subtle yet spirited personality. It may lack the WRX's giant hood scoop, but the Mazdaspeed 3's fenders are wider than the regular Mazda 3's and the hood is raised to channel cool air to the top-mounted intercooler. It's subtle and attractive. Even from the WRX's best angle, the Mazdaspeed 3 is better-looking. Much of the credit must go to the flared fenders hugging its large 18-inch diameter wheels. A thick-rimmed steering wheel, bold center tach and polished-aluminum pedals all make the Mazdaspeed 3 interior feel very European. Mazdaspeed 3's seats have grippy fabric seating surfaces with durable leather-trimmed bolsters. Black and gray leather with red stitching sets the mood in the interior.
