EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Mazda has truly transformed the Mazda 6 from a sporty alternative to the mainstream, to a world class family sedan that appeals to those seeking style and substance.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Within its class the Mazda 6 is a top performer. The 272-horsepower V6 is the most powerful in the segment and provides competitive fuel economy. The 4-cylinder version has been upgraded to 2.5-liters and is now fully competitive in the field. Five-and-six speed automatics are available, the latter having an Adaptive Active Shift feature tailored for sporty driving. We appreciate the availability of a six-speed manual transmission.

Comfort

RATING

For a sedan who's motto is zoom-zoom, the Mazda 6 is surprisingly supple and isolated. Wind, road and engine noises are minimal. Suspension noise and crashiness is non-existent. Front seats are wide and soft but offer little in the way of lateral support. Rear seats are spacious and easy to access. Driving position is excellent with plentiful seat and steering wheel adjustments.

Function

RATING

The instrument panel is large and easy to read. Interior controls are simple, clearly marked and intuitive. HVAC is controlled with rotary knobs as is the base stereo system. When equipped with the optional navigation screen, the audio system is controlled via combination of rotary knobs and a touch-screen. A 60/40 split folding rear seat increases the already class-leading 16.6 cubic feet of trunk space. There are two cup holders available for the front seats and two for the rear-seat passengers.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Mazda family cues characterize the 6, from its RX-8 inspired fenders to the sharply cut headlights and gaping mouth found on the 2010 Mazda 3. Detail oriented and focused on quality, the fit, finish and execution are top-notch. Materials are good, never great.
