Our test car was equipped with Toyo Proxes A18 tires. Mazda 5, a compact minivan that seats six yet still fits neatly into compact parking spots. Smaller than a minivan but taller than a wagon, the Mazda 5 is unique in the U.S. market. An in-dash six-disc CD changer with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls is standard on the Mazda 5. Simple and pleasing to the eye, the gauge cluster illuminates green at night. To the left of the four-speed automatic shifter with manual mode, you'll find easy-to-operate controls for the navigation system. The America-bound Mazda 5 should look identical to this European version, save different bumpers. Mazda claims its zoom-zoom DNA runs through the 5's taut suspension. Mazda 5's 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve inline-four engine delivers 157 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and produces 148 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Somewhat annoying, the glovebox is positioned too low. When you have a front-row passenger, it can't be opened more than a couple of inches. With second- and third-row seats folded flat, the Mazda 5 offers 5 feet of cargo space. Twin sliding doors that can be opened with just one finger allow for easy access to the second row. The Mazda 5's front grille bears a close resemblance to the rest of the Mazda family. A handful of exterior details distinguishes the entry-level Sport model from the Touring model, including the addition of foglamps, body-colored mirrors, side skirts and a rear spoiler for the Touring. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard on both models. Brushed metal adds an upscale feel to the Mazda 5's interior. The optional seven-passenger seating configuration may be limited to the European market. The Mazda 5 has theater-style seating, meaning the hip point of each seat is 2 inches higher than the seat in front of it. Third-row passengers will find legroom a little stingy. But they get cupholders and adjustable headrests.
