2004 Mazda 3 Hatchback s 4dr Hatchback (2.3L 4cyl 5M)

Review

For what you get, this car is a steal. For $19k MSRP my car has leather, side/curtain airbags, 17" alloys, CD, air, power everything, a very slick manual. I got about $1k off MSRP (about $700 over invoice) after bargaining HARD with 5 dealers in LA area (the manuals are very hard to get...don't believe forum postings, you won't get close to $300 over invoice on the 5M hatch). After a week, the car has not disappointed. It is simply outstanding. The handling and performance is suprising--very BMW like in its agility and fun factor. The utility is great (I already have done a Home Depot run with the seats folded), and the interior has high style.

Best Features

Driving dynamics, styling (reminiscent of Alfa 147, not availabile in the states), cargo utility, and the leather IMO is great for the price. Rims are beautiful. Engine is plenty powerful for size and weight of car. Body feels very stiff.

Worst Features

Fuel economy not great so far (24s), but hopefully will improve once broken in. Some switchgear feels a little cheap. I'm a little unsure about long term quality/reliability due to Ford connection.

Review

The Mazda 3s Hatchback is the best blend of handling, fun to drive factors and looks for under $20K. In fact, I test drove an Acura TSX, Suburu WRX and Accord EX-L which all cost 2-7K more and couldn't find any compelling reason to pay more. The 3 handles very crisply (See MotorTrend Slalom times) and the acceleration, although not WRX explosive, is quick and linear. Plus, the looks of this car distinguish it from every other car out there. Take a curve at 60 mph and the 3 sucks down onto the road. This type of performance is coupled with good damping so even harsh road surfaces are not too intrusive. The ABS is a must option and I added Xenons, leather and 6

Best Features

Exterior, xenons, meaty leather steering wheel, and clean interior styling. Best feature is the handling. Take your foot of the gas in 2nd and the engine makes cool sounds. Excellent feel of the 5 speed shifter and clutch. You feel the road just the right amount.

Worst Features

The center console should be made narrower to increase lateral leg room. Mazda needs to refine some of the sounds of the car. The signal indicators are too loud and the seat belt beep should turn off after 5 beeps. (Dealers can deprogram but charge $100). Tuner parts-bump hp to 200.

Love the car

Best Features

love the Triptronic and the handelling of the Car ... kudos to mazda had worked readlly hard to make this car ..

Worst Features

One issue with the car is had a big Trunk would be Great if it was sacrificed for more leg room in the Rear seat. Driver side seat design is horrble the Cd Cabinate needs to be moved to right or may be the accelerater is to much on the right.. cd dashbord keeps hitting you right leg

Review

THE SURPRISE IS THAT IT DOES NOT DRIVE HANDLE OR LOOK LIKE AN ECONOMY CAR. THE INTERIOR FOR IT'S CLASS IS OUTSTANDING. THE 17 INCH WHEEL ENHANCE THE RIDE AND APPEARANCE. THERE ARE NONE IN THIS CLASS THAT GIVE YOU SUCH VALUE FOR THE DOLLAR (IE THE LIST OF STANDARD EQUIPMENT IS IMPRESSIVE).

Best Features

THE RIDE HANDLE AND APPEARANCE. PUT THE REAR SEAT DOWN AND YOU CAN CARRY SOME SERIOUS CARGO. IT SHIFTS LIKE A MIATA AND THE BRAKING IS ABOVE AVERAGE.

Worst Features

MAZDA BUILT A WINNER AND THEY MUST KEEP PRICE INCREASES TO A MINIMUM.
