I have a 2001 Mazda 626 V6. This is my second Mazda and I got 200K with my first. I'm now at 106K miles and recently had the timing belt replaced (but not the water pump). Right after that the harmonic balancer actually broke so that was replaced. Had a high pitch squealing right after that and the check engine light began blinking- solid - blinking. Took into my mechanic and ... Read More
my 01 626 just started having transmission problem. I changed the fluid. The pump is working, the filter is not stopped up. When you put it in drive from a dead stop, it does not want to go. You have to rev the rpms up to like 2000 and it will slowly start moving until it gets up to like 20 mph then will shift good and no problem after that. ... Read More
I have a 2001 Mazda 626 that has been running fine, the car cranked right up but the shifter was not engaging. I could go from P to 1 like it was air. I had a friend manually put it in reverse, then drive so I could get home. Its at the shop now and the mechanic says it is the plastic peice in the shifter part that is stripped. The ... Read More
I have my 626, 108K. Recently, I had crank-no-start issues. Sporadically. Like first try = cranks, no start. second try, starts right up. Happened maybe 3 or 4 times over the course of a month. Last Monday, crank and crank and crank, wouldn't start all day. Had it towed to a non-dealer service center. They said that the fuel pump is working, as in getting voltage, but that it's not getting ... Read More
I would avoid dropping the pan. I would also avoid power flushing the tranny fluid, as this can cause a lot more damage in the poorly designed Ford tranny's. What I strongly recommend is to add a Tranny Cooler, since the major reason the tranny fails in the first place is because of heat. Mazda was taken over by Ford in the late 90's, and used a whole bunch of Ford ... Read More
I have a 2001 mazda 626 and have the trans. cooler on it already and it works great but i just recently put a trans tune product in form autozone and my overdrive light started flashing but it sifts and runs normal. what should i do?
Justfixit, you may want totry what pscantlin did in response no. 14. I'm having the same problem with my 2001 626. Sometimes it will start and sometimes not. When it won't start after 3 or 4 trys, I use starting fluid and it starts; just like you're doing. After it starts, it runs fine. I will probably replace my sensor also before I buy a distributer. I've heard that has been ... Read More
Just got off the phone with a mechanic who claims that the motor in my 2001 Mazda 626 is "fried". The car has 115,000 miles on it. I want to check with you all to see if you think he's right. Here's the situation: Saturday, I drove my car on a 100 mile trip with absolutely no problems. Pulled it into the parking lot and went to bed. Early Sunday morning ... Read More

Hello Ernie, One quick question: Does the O/D light Flash when on extended highway trips? If it does, you may have a "known" Mazda Service Issue. My 1998, Mazda 626 LX 4 cyl 2.0 had a very similar issue that happened only after driving at highway speeds for about an 70 minutes. I spoke with a guy who rebuilds these transmissions. I had the same question when I bought my used 2001 626 V6. My Mazda dealer (not where I bought the car) service manager told me it was just the automatic tranny.
My 2001 Mazda 626's thermostat has been fluctuating down to C for the last three days. I noticed it 4 days ago. I turned the car on in the evening (in the 50s out) and the needle sat on C for several miles (longer than ususal) and then slowly came up to just below the half way mark. I looked down several minutes later and it fluctuated down toward the C ... Read More
I have a '99 ES V6 with almost 170k miles on it. The car has always used a little oil since I bought it new. Not excessive by any definition, but between 3k oil changes, the oil level would come down from "FULL" on the mark to 3/4 way down to the lower line. So about 3/4 of a quart per 3k miles. I change oil every 3k miles and usually ... Read More
I bought this car last year with only 32K miles on it. One of the first things I noticed was blue smoke when starting it after not being run for a few days. Hello folks, new here. My wifes Escort finally died and I was seriously thinking about replacing it with a Mazda 626. I have a 2001 Mazda 626 ES. I love the car but recently in hot weather when in stopped traffic or idling the temp. gauge reads hot and the A/C blows hot air. Hi. I've been having problems with my 2001 4cyl mazda 626 not starting in warm weather. The Fuel Pressure Regulator keeps going bad. I've replaced it twice in two years. Hello all -- I have a 2001 626 LX with approx 86,000 miles. It has developed a sound in the rear end (shocks/struts/something else?) that sound like a "cuckoo" clock when I go over speed-bumps or bumpy roads in general. Questions: Any clue what this might be? And more important -- how serious / expensive this might be to fix? I am considering trading it in on a 2005 Mazda Tribute, ... Read More
I have something similar in my 2001 626...the mazda dealership said it was a loose bushing or something, not dangerous...and about $140 to fix. I've had other rattling in the rear end though as well, so it could be other things. my 626 has had a host of low-cost rear end noise issues, no idea why.

At 60K you should replace the following: timing belt (cam and front crank seals optional) spark plugs (use OEM platinum plugs) spark plug leads (wires) fuel filter engine coolant (including radiator flush) - use only orange Mazda type coolant. In addition recommend fuel injector cleaning and EGR valve circuit cleaning, as well as EGR valve inspection and cleaning. Also, have all brake pads checked for wear.
You may want to run a carfax report if you're concerned about the car's history. You're not going to find any repair history on it, but it may shed some light on why it's back on the lot so soon. If the car was obtained locally by the dealer, they may also be willing/able to provide you with it's service history. I've come across 1-2 year old models that were former ... Read More

No. My experience with Mazda's is that the 626 is the most troublesome model in the line-up, including the Tribute. Thanks Pat - for the suggestion of Edmunds's new Mazda section. I'd already been there and noticed that Edmunds doesn't have any specs or reviews of the new 626 so I was hoping that someone here might have details on whether the modifications will be minor or major. My real question is whether it's worth waiting for the new version in Spring/Summer or buy a 2001 626 now?
It's not fair to compare Nissan Altima's 2002 model with the current 626. The altima just came out barely a month and its totally new. Their 2001 model only has 155HP max and no V6 compared to 170HP on Mazda's V6; DOH. When Mazda release their new 626 next year, it's going to have a 3.0V6 with roughly 210-220HP. Yes, it's not 255HP like the Altima has, but it would be ... Read More

OK... When the dealer installs the rear spoiler, it is considerably more expensive than the factory-installed spoiler. Are they adding the moonroof deflector at the dealership as well? Those two probably account for the extra money. It looks like a pretty good deal.

Regardless of what anyone paid for thier 2001 lx v6 I Think it's a great car, well put together, every bit as good as a Honda. What a difference in the build quality of the 626 compared to the Tribute. I'm satisfied, don't like buying premium gas and the v6 needs a bit more power, but that is about it.
Got one in March '01. V6, ABS, Premium pack with 16" Rims and AUTOMATIC Trans, and Bose System, Sunroof, Chestnut (Maroon). I paid 22,951. Happy with the car except for the lumbar support of the driver's seat, as I am 6' 1" and am picky. Thanks!
Believe it or not, whether the 2.0 engine is an interference fit or not is open to question. Most of the sites that copied the Gates Rubber Company booklet assert that it is.
