Sounds to me like the head gasket blew when the engine overheated. 97K is nothing for that car as mine has 261K and another on here has 300K so it's really toss up. I can't speak of other issues as mine hasn't had any until now. I'm waiting reply regarding some tranny slippage that seems to be happening now.

Dittos on what windowphobe6 just posted. My 1999 Mazda 626 manual is silent on transmission servicing other than "add fluid when not in the cross hatches range". I've called two Mazda dealers and got two different approaches - one said bring it in and lets flush - the other said flush and you'll be sorry - we only change the fluid in the pan. I'm going that route since that is ... Read More

My 1999 Mazda 626 (4cyl)has about 53k flawless miles on it. No mention in owners manual about transmission service. I've received conflicting info. from 2 different dealers. 800# for Mazda service said only change fluid if it becomes discolored. I believe in preventative maintenance. I'd drop the pan and change the filter but one Mazda service manager told me NOT to do that if car is shifting good. Said it could ... Read More

Hi, I am new to the forum and have been reading the posts related to transmission failures in the 626. I have not read every single post, so I hope I am not beating a dead horse here, but I bought a new 1999 Mazda 626 ES 4-cyl in October 1999. In March of this year at 27,000 miles I was returning from a ski trip with a gaggle of girl ... Read More

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 LX still under warranty. It's about ready for the 30,000 mile tune up. However the local authorized service center in Oakland quoted $650 for that service. That seems quite high to me. Does anybody know another provider in the local area that might be both reliable and more reasonable in pricing. Thanks, Alan alesk@cwia.com

Expanding and contracting I guess. I now have a 2001 Mazda 626 v6, windows creat that is about it. Also regular and mid grade gas seem okay but best performance, no hesitation, is with premium. There was only one 626 ES model, until 1999 when Mazda started offering the ES trim on the 4 cylinder model. 1998 and before ESs were all V6 models. Mazda also dropped the DX models after the 1998 model year.
