Good ignition wires are vital on these engines and I found only one brand that works well... NGK... so don't waste your time and $ as I did on other so-called premium wires on your Mazda because they just don't work right, causing power-robbing misfires and stall-outs at low RPMs. Secondly, after owning 2 nearly identical Mazda 626 LX V6 manual cars (1998 and 2000 models) with similar ongoing starting troubles ... Hopefully you have your issues taken care of by now. The 02 sensor will also come on if the wires to it are not connected. Since you cut and splice the wires when you change the sensor - double check your splices. I replaced my sensors at about 90000 miles, am at 150000 now. No problems. If the sound from the back end you hear is ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka and it occurs sporadically ... Read More
When trying to start my 626 frequently the key turn doesn't seem to activate the starter. However if I push the key in very firmly the car starts just fine. The problem seems to be getting worse and I'm afraid we'll get stranded sometime. Any suggestions would be very welcome. All electrics appear to be normal and the battery never struggles. Thanks
I would avoid dropping the pan. I would also avoid power flushing the tranny fluid, as this can cause a lot more damage in the poorly designed Ford tranny's. What I strongly recommend is to add a Tranny Cooler, since the major reason the tranny fails in the first place is because of heat. Mazda was taken over by Ford in the late 90's, and used a whole bunch of Ford ... Read More

I am looking very seriously at buying a used 1998 mazda 626 for between $4,500-5,000 with 90,000-110,000 on it. Life expectancy of a modern car should be about 175K-225K if it is well cared for...of course, this doesn't include accident damage ending the car's life. Anything over that is really just borrowed time and you probably don't want to push a car that far. So if you are driving 12K a year, figure 4 years before you get really serious about changing.
My mazda currently has about 130,000 miles on it. We had the transmission overhauled about a year and a half ago and have been pretty good about regular maintenance. How many miles do you think I can expect out of this car before it dies?? Thanks in advance!
You know, I am puzzled about this tranny issue. I looked up the reliability ratings on the 2000 626 in CR, and it is well above average overall and the auto tranny is above average. I would think there would be more 4 cylinder 626s sold than V6s, so a major problem with the auto tranny on 4 cylinder models would be reflected in CR's rating. Also, here is what Consumer ... My 1999 ES V6 5 speed has the cam sensor located inside the rear valve cover, close to a cam sprocket. 1999 626 V6 does not have a distributor though.
The cam sensor is an integral part of the distributor according to this info: http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/14/47/c1/09- 00823d801447c1.jsp

Sorry to hear that, but there is ton of information available on horrible history of 4 cyl Mazda 626 auto transmissions. It is a good idea to do a little research before buying a car with problematic history. A manual transmission would have been a far wiser choice in this car.
Have you tried calling Mazda customer service and asking them whether they'd be willing to split the cost? Manufacturers often will, as a "good faith" gesture.
I am a new member with my 1999 Mazda 626 ES. It is a nice car but with one problem. The air condition doesn't work well. It is not as cool as other Mazda 626. I don't know what's wrong. Do you guys have the same question? One of my friend has a 1998 Mazda 626 LX, and his air condition works perfectly. Thanks for your help.
If it has fuel and spark it pretty much has to start....fire + fuel = explosion, and that's pretty reliable physics. So if you really have fuel and spark you might have busted a timing belt. You might take off the oil cap and have someone spin the engine and see if the camshaft is turning in there.
I have a 1998 mazda 626 with a 4 cylynder engine, about 3 month ago it just stopped running. I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel regulator, and the coil to no avail. it seems to be gettin lots of fuel and spark but it wont start. any sugestions on where else to look.
I have a 1998 Mazda 626 that keeps giving a ODBII code of P0443 evap purge control system. I traced part of the vacuum line and tried to find the charcoal canister. I never noticed the problem since I bought the vehicle a year ago, but I just got an oil change and the mechanic told me the engine was making a sucking sound that might indicate a cracked intake manifold. (This place doesn't fix that sort of thing, though) I opened the hood and heard it for myself, and it certainly isn't a healthy sound to me. From what I've read on ... Read More

Most of the issues with the LA4A-EL (aka the Ford CD4E) have already been addressed in production; the major fixes were phased in between 1996 and 1998. In theory, they fixed the AT for 1998 and made modifications throughout 1994-1997. It still isn't up to the level of Mazda's other AT that they use in the V6.
