OK so I have the same car you do but it is a 99. I had the same problem and didn't see that i was leaking anything, but check the overflow tank, meaning the plastic containter you pour your antifreeze in. I had a slight crack underneath it that I couldn't see my mechanic did. I replaced that and my car doesn't run hot anymore. When I did this, my problem ... Read More
Hello, I am at the end of my rope with this problem. Let me start by letting you know what I did do to try to fix my problem. I have changed both fans, cleaned and flushed the radiator, bought a new radiator, both of the radiator caps have been changed, I changed the thermostat, change every possible hose that I could find on the car, change the water pump, there ... My sister picked up a 1994 626 the transmission surges and the engine idles way too fast. she manages this by shifting up and down thru the gears.Neutral at stop signs and stop lights etc. Now the lock on the shift automatically locks on it's own, I am trying to help her with this problem. Can any one give me some insight on this transmission problem ? Thanks dennis
I had a quite similar problem where I was driving my 626 up a long grade (crossing the rockies) with a LOT of weight on it. There was a loud bang sound, and I pulled off at the next service station. There was transmission fluid all over the engine block. It looked like at least a quart had exploded from somewhere. I never could find the cause, so it must have ... Read More
I have a 1996 Mazda 626 with a bad engine. It has the 2.0L 4 cyl. with a manual transmission. It seems the only engine that will work is a 1996 or 1997 model engine. I can buy a 1994 2.0l worth the money. What is the difference in these engines? Both are DOHC engines and look the same. I have looked at the parts web sites and all the engine ... Read More
I bought my car about 6 months ago.It worked fine untill about 5 days ago.It would cut out when I was doing any where from 40-60 mph then it would decelerate to about 20-30 mph...I even had to pull off the road. Or when I would stop at a stop light my car would die, so i would crank it up. even though it struggled to start back up on the ... Read More
Today, I happened to look under my 1994 Mazda 626 and saw a wire hanging down in front of the rear wheel on the passenger side. Upon inspection, I found it to be small ground strap that was broken, with one end still bolted to the body of the car. I tried to locate where the other end was attached, but could not find it. Does anybody out there know what ... Read More
I have a 1994 Mazda 626, which is now on its 3rd transmission (the original blew up in 1998, the second in 2003) Now, lucky me, it has a leak at the seal between the engine and transmission...that is what the mechanic told me ( i know a slight bit about cars, not enough to fix big troubles...can't remember what seal he called that). I was wondering if anyone had success ... Read More

Hi, I have a 1994 Mazda 626 ES V6, automatic. Within the last month or so, my car has begun to stall while slowing down, progressivly becoming more frequent. All that needs to be done is to put the car in park, turn it off and re-start (starts no problem). More recently, in addition to that problem, while driving the car it jerks and the engine light comes on. The engine ... Read More

Well the problem is that the code doesn't mean these items are bad, it only means that these items are unhappy for some reason, which could be caused by something else (nice, huh?) . Maybe will jump in to help you here, he's a working tech, I'm not.
Mr Shiftright . I got a 159 (MAF) and a 181 (heated O2 sensor) as I mentioned in POST # 1668 before I left Greece. I was not sure I did it right but I have found out from other sites that in fact I did. If its a O2 sensor Mazda says they have 3 of them . I have heard they have one ? If there are 3 how ... Well Mr Shiftright . My Wife just drove the car 145 miles and used 4.96 gallons (18.80 liters )so mileage was 29.32 on the hwy . She told me car seemed weak on the long uphill climbs. Its pretty high there in mountains of Greece and thin air might contribute or maybe she shoulda put in in 2nd because tranny is, and she is also, reluctant to downshift. Any thoughts on ... Read More
Some kind of fuel delivery issue...sounds like its running rich. Do you have somewhat disappointing fuel mileage on this car?
When running car (parked) to warm it up pre testing, it is almost impossible to maintain 2000 rpm . Get near 2000 then surges to 2500 and then when I try to back off it drops back to 1500. I know people have mentioned surging here but only happens when not under load. Also CEL used to come on only under load (uphill accelerating etc) but since I have installed xternal ... Read More
I have a 1994 Mazda 626 DX (Manual, 4cyl) And I have been having a problem with the engine for several years, that no mechanic that I have taken it to has been able to solve! I know somebody who has a 1994(?) 626 ES V6 with a 5 speed manual with about 170K miles on it and running strong. I have a 99 ES V6 5 speed model, which has been less than great, but the engine runs good and after warranty expiration the car has been surprisingly troublefree. I bought my 626 new in 1994. It is now on its third automatic trans. For a while I pondered how Ford could make such poor transmissions after so many years in business. However, by the time the third transmission started failing (with the same series of problems as the first two), my dealer had learned something which stopped the problems in their tracks. The dealer informed me that if I ... Read More

I have a 1994 Mazda 626 4cyl. Lately, it's been stalling at stops, due to low idle. It hesitates a bit, then shudders, then dies. I have 131,000 miles on it, and don't want to sink a bunch of money into it. After reading enough messages on the failure of the 1994 and later Mazda 626 CD4E automatic transmission failures, I am despondent. My transmission is spilling fluid from the vent. Am I really faced with a complete rebuild or is the replacement of the redesigned pump plate and gasket a smaller job costing less? (cf. Message 17). Would a flush perhaps cure this problem?
I've been reading alot about the Mazda 1994 626 transmission problems... Does anyone know if there are any substantial problems with the 1990 626? Thanks
I'm considering buying a USED Mazda 626 EX, for a first time car. This will be my first car and just trying to get something to get around with, but at the same time looks decent for under $6000. Has anyone had any problems with this car. If so how expensive is it to fix? Any reliability issues? Appreciate any help.
I bought my 1994 mazda 626 lx with a 4 cyl. and 5-speed about a year and a half ago. After having some ticking noises coming from the engine I had a rod break in the engine. Hi all: I had described my problem in #512. I just went to the dealer and he pulled-up the code. It was code - 181. He tells me that its the air-flow meter which has gone bad. Hi all: I have a 1994 Mazda 626, Auto, V4, 93,500 miles. I bought this car from a used-car dealer in Jan 2000 (76000 miles). Till last month, it gave me no problems. Hi,friends, There is a 1995 Mazda 626, with 89k miles and everything else seems OK. I know nothing about cars, but I was told that there is some serious problem with 626( since 1994). Is it true? If anybody could give some help, I will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi, I am planning to buy a used Mazda 626 V6,1994 model. I think it was the first time 6 cylinder engine was introduced...Is there anybody who has any experiences with the same model????.....if you could send in your comments I would be more than obliged....Hoping to hear from ya all soon....Thanks a lot
Most of the horror stories you hear about 626 transmissions (not all by any means, but a clear majority) have to do with the four-cylinder cars, which since 1994 have been fitted with Ford's CD4E transaxle, a decent-enough slushbox with a couple of horrid design flaws that should have been fixed before Job 1. (The worst bugs have since been swatted.) The V6 cars have Mazda's own automatic, in production since ... Read More
In theory, they fixed the AT for 1998 and made modifications throughout 1994-1997. It still isn't up to the level of Mazda's other AT that they use in the V6. But it is more reliable and I would recommend it only in the '98 and later models. Note, however, that I4/AT is apathetically slow. I know some of you won't buy a Mazda again, but please let me attempt to change ... Read More
