The car starts right up every time. It will not stay at an even idle once I shift to drive. If I don't give it gas to move it will lope and cut off. Neutral or park and she starts right up.I have to act like a standard shift to keep all things working. It is getting a little worse every day. I am puzzled at the engine running good with ... I have a 1990 Mazda 626 DX. I HAD belt problems with my alternator belt as well. There are several things to consider. #1.If the belt is removed, can the alternator pulley spin freely? It should keep spinning after you let go of it for at least a second or two. #2. The new pulley you installed should ALSO spin freely. Sometimes one can over tighten a perfectly good pulley, and ... I have a 1990 Mazda 626 with a 2.2l 5 sp manual trans I found my way here looking for any answers to my problem I'll explain. My car shudders/stutters when a starting out and trying to maintain a constant speed. It "shudders" in all gears while maintaining a constant speed; say 30mph . It is more noticeable in a lower gear and RPM. It completely stops above 3,000 rpm in ... Read More
I'm not sure of the later models of 626's,but I have a 1990 with automatic transmission and I have heard from more than one source that unless a seperate aftermarket transmission fluid cooler is installed($40-$80 part cost)those transmissions are prone to early failure because of heat builup. Also that the electronics associated with those automatics can be troublesome at times when a mechanical failure is suspected. Regular fluid changes are also ... Read More
Sunday it flash flooded in Dallas, and while driving home I ran into high water and stalled. (I was not being stupid, there was just nowhere to go. Everything happened so fast.) I cannot get the car started again, so I had it towed home. It's a 1990 Mazda 626. It was on it's last legs anyway, but I need to get it running again til I can get a new ... Read More
I have 1990 Mazda 626 GLX, 4cyl, 12 valve, 2.0 l, 5 spd manual trans. I recently changed the head with a 1989, but now it keeps going out of time, does anyone know how many teeth are on the '89 camshaft sprocket versus the '90 as I think this may be the problem.
I got a 1990 Mazda 626 DX from a friend about a year ago. Original engine, auto trans., and Fuel injection. 197000 miles. Recently I was driving home and my CEL started flashing in some pattern. I pulled over and it looked like there was low oil. so I filled it up. Today the light came on again but without the flashing. It will only come on while I am doing ... Read More
What model year are the cars (1990, 1995, 2002, etc) and are they manual or automatics?

Take the door panels off and lubricate the tracks. This will help some but Mazda windows seem to get slow with age. My 92 Miata's driver side window was so slow it looked like it would stop dead in its track but it operated that way for the 2 years I owned it and never quit. As for the switches, it is possible but I don't know if anyone supplies them ... Read More
I bought my 626 new in 1994. It is now on its third automatic trans. For a while I pondered how Ford could make such poor transmissions after so many years in business. However, by the time the third transmission started failing (with the same series of problems as the first two), my dealer had learned something which stopped the problems in their tracks. The dealer informed me that if I ... Read More
The 626 is a great car, but the automatic transmission does need some care. My Mazda mechanic is a 20 year specialist for Mazda. He recommends the following Initially. Purchase 2 bottles of Lubegard Automatic Transmission Treatment from a NAPA store. Completely Flush out the existing transmission fluid. Drop the Tranny pan then replace the filter and clean out any existing filings on the magnet. Restore the transmission fluid mixed with ... Read More
I can assure you that Mazda will keep its identity while platform sharing. Take a look at the Ford Escort ('91-'00) and Mazda Protege ('90-'98). They both sat on the Protege platform and shared their top-of-the-line engines (Mazda 1.8L DOHC BP-series, also used in the Miata). There was absolutely no identity crisis there. Another example is to take a look at the Kia Sephia. To this day, it still sits on ... Read More
the a/c system in the v6 626(ford). All mazdas are using ford diagnostics for obdII. the fuel tank and its components are ford. I'm sure i could come up with a few more if i really thought about it. By the way, if you like a car..buy it. Also, the 1990 626 was a better car than just about anything mazda makes today, but it is old and time catches up ... Read More

Hi I just purchased a 1990 Mazda 626 DX Sedan with 103,000 miles a few months ago for $2300.00. (Too high?) My mechanic (whom I purchased the car from) put in a used transmission (30,000 miles on it)- which is still under warranty. I also purchased all new engine mounts for the car as well (almost $500 bucks). Besides the check engine light always on (which my mechanic said it's "nothing ... Read More

I'm just about to get rid of my 1990 Mazda 626 (purchased new in 1989). Here's my tips on fixing some of the problems we encountered. Hope it helps! Leak in Trunk - the water is coming in through the tail lights. Get rid of the foam seals around the plastic light covers and use silicone caulk instead. It might be harder if you ever have to remove the plastic light ... Read More
I was just wondering if anyone has any advice for me purchasing a used mazda. It is a 1991 Mazda with 40,000 miles. Its has a manual transmission and is loaded with a lot of options. I have a choice between that car and others that are similar but, with 80,000+ miles. I was wondering if anyone has had or knows someone that owns a 1990-1992 mazda 626, and if so, ... Read More
